New Rules on Renewing Tourist Visas?

PostAuthor: ThanuHak » September 15, 2009, 11:58 am

A few people have been mentioning to me that the authorities are clamping down on renewing tourist visas - in VTE and elsewhere; i.e., you can't do it if you have a few in your passport already. Someone said Penang is even harder than Vientiane these days - anyone have any RECENT experience or knowledge?

There's probably a post somewhere on this here but I couldn't find it.

Does anyone know details of new laws, clamping down (further), etc.?

Was also told that due to the tightening vice, many expats are relocating to Indochina & elsewhere - anyone have experience or knowledge (or links) about this?

I can never get info on other sites about the down & dirty facts amongst all the babbling, so thought I'd ask here, where folks seem more sensible!

Cheers for any info-leads-tips-advice.

I did hear of a law that was to be introduced some time back, that would only let a passport holder get a set number of re-entries back into Thailand.

I cannot for the life of me remember where or exactly when I read it, neither can I find out anything more about it on the net.

The only info I have on the matter was the last set of rules that were issues back in 2006 I think:

A tourist visa will be issued to applicants wishing to enter the Kingdom for tourism purposes. You are not allowed to work or conduct business with a tourist visa.
A tourist visa will be issued to applicants wishing to enter the Kingdom for tourism purposes. You are not allowed to work or conduct business with a tourist visa.

A tourist visa is valid for 60 days and can be extended 30 days at the nearest Immigration office. Fee 1,900 Baht (as per 2003-08-26).

Most western countries does not need a Tourist visa. Complete country list.

A friend of mine has told me that some of the better known exit/entry points (Malaysia/Cambodia and Burma) have stopped issuing tourist visas and have implemented a 3 strikes and you are out system.

So you can get 3 renewals/extensions but that is it, no more for 6 months after the final visa expires.

But apparently Nong Khai is still issuing them, which is one of the reasons, my friend and his colleagues always come here to get a renewal/extension now.

It would be nice to get some official clarification on the matter.
