Nightmare Thailand experience

Never heard this one before! My rental renewal comes up in 2 weeks,I will be taking a closer look at the fine print :yikes:

EMAIL OF THE WEEK - You roll the dice and hope for the best.

Getting off the plane here most tourists have no idea what kind of risks they are taking and facing. You are rolling the dice big time, with the odds of winning maybe just slightly higher than Las Vegas. Whether it's getting onto any kind of public transport, visiting any large venue with a lot of people, to the extent of just renting a room for a night or a villa for a longer period of time. I mean what could happen, we're on holiday, relax. So here's a timely story to bear in mind. Two years ago two Australians rented a house. Whilst out having dinner their rented house and all their belongings were burnt to the ground. The police decided that the cause was probably old faulty wiring so they weren't asked to pay for the house. They returned to Australia, and came back to Thailand for a vacation only last week. This was to be a 2-week vacation, ending in them starting already-arranged new jobs in Australia when they got home. When they got off the plane in Phuket, the police threw them in jail on a warrant that had been written in-absentia. A friend has bailed them out for 100,000 baht per person. Then the police said, "You're to pay the landlord 1.3 million baht to replace his house." At the police station, the landlord showed their signature on a rental agreement in Thai which said that anything that happened to the house, including tsunami, arson-loving landlords, and bandits, was the responsibility of the tenants. So he's delaying their return to Australia and their new jobs, and these dumb schmucks are paying that rich Thai landlord Aus$50,000 (THB 1.3 million), which is all their savings, right down to the last penny. The embassy provided a free lawyer (they say he's worthless), but won't otherwise intercede on their behalf.

'probably'.... open and shut case then.

scary story, but why sign on the dotted if you don't know what you are signing.. :freak: would they do it back in Oz...no because its The LOS and everything is 'smillie friendly people'...Amazing Thailand.
wonder if the Landlond had already rebuilt the wreaked house, and wonder why the Landlord didn't pull out the rental agreement at the time.. :-k

To sign a legal document that you do not understand is foolish in the extreme - whatever country you are from & whatever country you are in.
To complain after things go wrong for you is treated with short thrift by nearly any country's legal system.
How many people sign "pre-nuptials" then try & challenge them when the marriage goes wrong & they can't lay their hands on millions.
I agree 100% Stan that anyone should read the small print when signing any legal document - I am not keen on some of the 'language' contained in the quote though...
"Dumb schmucks" implies that because they are stupid they should not be responsible for their actions - something, personally, I think is not true.
"Rich Thai Landlord" - where does that come from??? Rich, compared to what??? Because he is "rich" & they are "stupid" that means they are not responsible for their actions???
"Free lawyer is useless" - maybe, more likely you signed to agree to get yourself into this situation & now he cannot get you out of it.
I would imagine that the true case is something along the lines they wanted to do the holiday for cheap, so, rather than book accommodation before they even arrived in Thailand, and so under conditions they understood, they waited until they got here.
So, they saved money... & the gamble went wrong...such is life - they would not have offered the owner extra if everything had gone according to plan...would they??????

Ulick, you may have overlooked the fact they are in Thailand, so would need their passports to get to Malaysia.

It's a similar situation with m/bike rental agreements. You are in fact agreeing to reimburse them for the full value of the m/bike if it is lost, stolen or damaged. Agreed the amounts are likely to be less.

I think actually,it would be far easier to sneak into Laos from Nong Khai. There is a Australian embassy or consulate in Vientiane. You would have to find someone willing to sneak you across the Mekhong.I certainly wouldn't want to swim across.

Agree completely. Signing legal documents without understanding what's in them is foolish and the fault of the purchaser. End of story.

where there's a will there's a way and as dougness rightly pointed out nong khai to laos might be better.
they would not have been the first and certainly not the last to go down this route. :guiness:

You can buy a hit for a lot less that 1.3 Million Thai Baht. Not that I would do that,,,,,,,, or recommend anyone else do that........ but :-#

Everybody says TIT,,,, or "when in Rome" etc, well,,,,,,,,, what do you think the Thai landlord would do if the situation was reversed,,,,, yeah right !!

go to your own embassy and get a new passport and fly out explain to them you need to get home to get the money and if Thailand blocks you tell them they will not get paid unless you let me go that to me is hostage taking for nothing more than a civil law suit which in reality is bogus I would also bet the house
was not worth 1.5 mil. more likely 750.000 baht which is about the cost of a simple one story dwelling

I just came up with idea take the train to Malaysia when you arrive at border have the malaysian border police deport you to your home country of course you have to pay the flight fare just Idea. try any thing to get the F**** out of thailand don't forget that 1.5 mil included the land also I bet so it a F**** scam and some one getting a piece of it in the Government office I never had to worry every document that get signed is signed by my wife I own nothing I rent nothing what does surprise me is your embassy is not helping you when they see it nothing more then a scam. Stan when your lease comes up for renewal
just have your wife sign it you do not sign NOTHING just remember this is the LOS land of scams
and if you get caught up in one which in most cases we all did at some time living here weather it was a scamming G/F along with her B/F or hubby it happened to most of us nothing to be ashamed of in fact
I look at it as I did some thing good for a thai family and walk away with my head in the AIR
