Can anyone recommend a decent optometrist in Udon?

In answer to your question I would think only in one of the major hospitals could help you Whiskeybravo. Maybe even Bangkok rather than Udon.

Well, I used to go to one in Udon. He had a small storefront shop and seemed quite competent. As that was back in the '70s, I dare say that he probably retired long ago. For an Ophthalmologist, I'm pretty sure one would have to travel to Bangkok.

Whiskybravo,
Go to;
Udonmap home page on top, click Maps, click Udon Thani. Scroll down to City... Large... FREE CLICK HERE.

Map opens, click to enlarge. Follow PHOSI RD away from left of circle to where 7-11 sign touches PHOSI RD, across from Thungsi Muang Park. Where 7-11 sign touches Phosi rd you'll find an optical shop.
They will give a free old style eye exam, and make your lenses on the spot, at least some kinds.

They do a decent job of examining, but watch out for the cheaper gold frames. The gold plate, if that's what one might call it, will start coming off in a couple weeks, so you might want to call them on that, and don't buy the less expensive gold frames.

AEK Udon has an Ophthalmologist some times, whenever...

Glasses shops in plenty around, you pays your money and takes your chance, Eye consultant I used the one in AEK but operations are done in Udon Hospital, the opthalmic surgeon is very competent, she replaced my lense on my left eye, by stiching the new one on.
Some minor probs following operation, but that is to be expected as the operation itself is very invasive to the eye.
yes one could go to bangkok, but then you have to travel to there for checkups, which over the past 2 years has been about once every 2-3 months.
Now everything ok.
I would reccomned her to anyone with eye probs, despie what people say the operation is the same in the whole country, it is just that in bangkok, it costs more and competence IS NOT guaranteed.

There is an Opthalmologist in Udon, Not sure of her name now, but pretty sure she is consulting to all the private hospitals as well as public.
