Picked up a bug

PostAuthor: wokkawombat » September 5, 2005, 9:20 am

For the last few days every time I tried to log onto Udonmap.com I got as far as the front page and was then redirected to a porn site.

I contacted Jeab as I thought the problem was there but it wasn't. A few friends tried and they could open the site ok.

I found my windows XP cd after turning the house upside down and started to back up my files onto cd's. A mate rang and suggested restoring my system to an earlier date. That worked an so here I am.

Question, can I make a copy of my windows xp disk without triggering some sort of delf destruct code that Bill has put in there and can I install it on another pc if I am only using one at a time?

Sometime in June, Microsoft did something to indentifying legal and illegal copies of Windows XP. So if both of your computers have identical information then updating won't be a problem, maybe. You might want to try the in formation I gave out at this post before wiping and reformating
http://www.udonmap.com/udonthaniforum/v ... .php?t=203. It has eliminated the redirects on my computer. It seems some of the FREE [-( software has adware that comes with it whether you like it or not, the agreement, before installing new FREE software, is best to be read. #-o

I use a combination of Ad Aware and Spybot search and destroy to eliminate spyware and adware. Both are free for personal use and you can find them at download.com and lots of mirror sites.

I believe (and stand open for correction) that Windows XP is for one machine and one machine only - even if you own both a desktop and a laptop - you have to buy separate copies for each machine, and.................

When you install it, it takes a snapshot of your hardware and remembers it. If you subsequently change more than three items of hardware - it will do untold things to you and you will have a terrible life forever after - something like that.

The reason for this 'snapshot' is to prevent you installing it into another machine - as it is very unlikely the second machine will be exactly the same spec. as the first - therefore there will be 3 or more different items of hardware, and this is where your life detiriorates to a slow agonising painful existence.

As you have probrably worked out _ I am not sure exactly what the consequences are of insatalling on a second machine - be it yours or your mate Johns down the road - but I seem to remember when it was released that there was this kind of protection somewhere.
Maybe it jsut stops you registering it - I really don't know - I'm sure someone will have the answer. ???

All well and good having them on your system, but please please make sure their definitions are 100% up to date, it only takes a second for a new (unknown) virus, spyware or trojan to appear.

Run the updates everyday if possible.

And yes, if you really do want to go along the route of a re-installation of xp, there is a way around the serials, I'm not going to post it on an open forum though, so pm/email me for details... ;)

The only benefits from the spyware/adaware programs are automatic updates and a couple of other bits, not really worth the money but it is nice to pay the programmer for his time so I usually make a donation via their links on the site, just a few ฃฃฃ's or something.

As for the big software companies, I will always try to avoid paying for the upgrade where possible, unless it really is a worthwhile upgrade.

Security Alert

PostAuthor: polehawk » September 6, 2005, 8:36 pm

While browsing this forum today I received a "Security Alert" from my Norton Internet Security system that I keep enabled. The info follows:

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Security Alert: a security alert appears when a remote computer or a program on your computer attempts to access a port that is also used by a known Trojan horse. This may indicate that someone is attempting to access your computer or that a Trojan horse is attempting to monitor incoming connections from other computers.
Not all Security Alerts are indications that your computer is under attack. Some harmless communication between computers may appear to be similar to common Internet attacks and can trigger Security Alerts.

What triggered this alert? A computer with the IP address 59.150.72.186 attemped to connect to your computer using Default Block Netbus Trojan horse.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the first Security Alert that I've received while in this forum but wondering if anyone else has experienced anything similar? Admin, can the IP address be traced to any program or user that might have access here? I have a Dell 2400 with Windows XP and I use IE browser if that's any help. :?:

Had similar experience tonight from IP 220.117.64.25 which is a Korean address. The address is not necessarily specific to one PC and its user, it may cover hundreds of users who may effectively be connected through one IP address, it all depends on the "internet architecture" of the local internet service provider.

Also have a Dell desktop (not sure which model) using XP & Firefox, so browser does not appear to be a common factor, but XP & Dell are. :?

Thanks for your efforts, guys. Even though the miscreant might have been using another person's computer, now have a lot of information on the server involved, person's name, phone number, etc. The email address appears to be a phony one, however. I don't go into any Korean websites, porn or otherwise, and know very few words in Korean (wish I knew a few Korean profanities right now). Just wanted to make others aware of the attempt. Admin, is it possible for you to block this server from accessing the forum?
