Thus he shows ID and signs the slip.
Employee says : "signature no good"
Until he gets the message: sings slip with SEE ID :D

Ter,

Not even bank employees have access to a given card's PIN number; there is no legitimate reason for a store clerk to know it. Though it may have been just a clerk trying to give the best customer service possible, I recommend that your wife take herself and the ATM card to the bank and enter a new PIN.

Gents,,,, some personal security experts recommend not signing the back of a credit card but write "photo ID required" instead..... sounds good to me,,,,, what do you think? And yes, I would definitely recommend going back to the bank and getting a new PIN...

Credit and debit card security is lower in Thailand than in the US. In the US the printed slip can not include the complete card number. Generally, only the final 4 numbers are printed. The first 12 numbers being represented by X's.

In Thailand this is seldom practiced. Most sales slips include the complete card number. You can protect your copy of the slip, but the store's copy is open game. Card numbers are valuable, and the first step in fraud.

I seldom use a credit or debit card in a store because it's just not worth the risk. Getting money from the ATM seems safer. Then I only have to worry about someone stealing it from me on the way to the cashier.

One possible solution to PIN numbers for multiple cards is to use the same number for all cards and not write it down anywhere. Then you only have to remember one number. You can change your PIN number at an ATM.

You should be able to change it via the ATM machine, (if the Thai ones have that option).

My U.S credit cards have a 3-digit 'security code' written in the back. You are required to provide that in all over the phone purchases. It does not however show up on the credit card slips since it is in the back of the card and digits are not raised as they are in the front. This, of course, is different from the 'pin numbers' associated with the ATM cards.
The only credit card I use in Thailand is one that has a fraud insurance coverage that I pay for each month.
