PIN NUMBER

PostAuthor: Ter » April 30, 2009, 5:28 pm

Is anyone aware of the rules and regs in lol on pin numbers for credit cards ?
On two occasions the wife has been asked to verbally give out her pin, once in robinsons to a cashier and once over the phone to a travel agent.
To my amazement and she has given it, as she was told that is the case, I and everyone else in the world is aware why a pin number was created or is this a bona fide rule in LoL, no wonder they smile. She has now been given a crash course in credit card fraud and now I am in the dog house. :( don't care anyway i will just have another beer :D
Is this a one or two off or have other members had the same experience ?

I've experienced two types of situation, though not the one you describe.

1. They ask me to sign the printed slip (on both a local ATM/debit card account, and on a UK credit card).

2. On the UK credit card, they usually ask me to sign the printed off slip, but on occasions I have been asked to key the PIN into their keypad (I understand the latter is the only system now in the UK).

I have never been asked to tell them my PIN, and wouldn't do so, if asked.

I understand your concern.

never been asked, and would never give out pin #. only thing close to that, would be entering a pin in a keypad for approval at a bank, for a transaction at the bank. 8)

I myself would not and am totally shocked that the wife was even asked at lobinson, I also noticed that the reader is fixed at the side of the till facing the cashier. This is in the department store lingerie dept.
Anyway my short sharp lesson on CC fraud for the wife means I have had my punani club membership revoked for a while :(

So new lingerie then Ter....Ooooo , and what is the cashier going to do with the PIN anyway..(apart from fraud)..are they entering it into the keypad themselves....?, could be ignorance on the cashiers part.

Keep an eye on transactions on that account Ter(sure you will anyway), no punani..no lingerie...but you can watch the TV in peace for a few days...so not all bad. :D

Yeah, she wanted to enter it herself thus rendering the reason for a pin useless, your right it's probably ignorance, or maybe lack of training, though she was most offended when I stepped in to avoid a calamity. I would rather upset her than the bank balance though.
The reason I was there was to buy something matching for westers and his poodle as I think he protests to much

I will only use a bit of plastic in Robinson' - because Robinsons has got the chip "n" pin technology, but always punch in the pin number without revealing it to anyone else. - If your card gets cloned it's going to be very hard to explain how the culprits had your pin number, I doubt you would get compensated -
cheaper to go without the punani for a day or two ....imo \:D/

Credit-card and Atm fraud is rampant here. I'm continually amazed at folks on holiday who
whip-out their plastic as if it's back home. There are reasons for all these protective measures.
Verifying a signature or home address or some other such non-compromising data would seem
to be far wiser. But of course the person who is liable is likely to be the only one getting upset.

Never tell your pin number to anybody ever.

If anybody asks for it then you have to ask about their credibility.

Slightly off track but about PIN numbers
Last year my girl friend had her bag snatched in Udon. Inside she had 4 cards 1 was hers,1 was her mothers, 1 was her brothers and the other was her brothers daughters.
After the snatch i chased the culprit through Udon and lost him.
Straight away I reported it to the police and bank to stop the cards, which were all bangkok bank.
23 minutes had gone by when we spoke to the bank and they said all 4 cards had been empted.
1 in 9 mins
1 in 13 mins
1 in 15 mins
1 in 18 mins
I said how can this be, how do they know the PIN numbers. I looked at my G/F and said dont tell me all the PINS are your birthday dates and the same number. She said yes  I said are you stupid or what and she replied everyone does the same.
Of course in her hand bag was also her I.D. with her date of birth :fryingpan:
Just as a matter of interest I asked 10 thai ladys who came into our bar the next day, some married to falang some not and 8 out of the 10 said they use D.O.B. for their PINS
Just a word of warning dont expect that commen sense is always used, its not.

Very good point Aces. Avoid obvious numbers or writing it down.

Another point occured to me, prompted by how quickly they got to your GF's accounts - keep a note of the Banks call centre telephone no, where you can access it quickly, (in your mobile phone or separately if that's in the same place/bag with the ATM cards) so that you can contact them and cancel the card asap.

We are talking about credit cards, and not debt cards, right. For my credit cards I don't have a pin #, for the only reason you would need a pin # for american credit cards, would be to get a cash advance.

I have noticed that Robinson's will no longer accept (I guess) foreign credit cards. This last December I bought a camera and used a credit card, and no problem. A couple of months back, tried to use a credit card, and they showed be a sign, mostly in thai. Told me to go to ATM, well on the way to an ATM, found what I exactly wanted, so they lost the sale, and I got the exact model I was looking for, plus saved a few baht.

If you need reminding and have to write them down....disguise them as 'phone numbers'...top tip of the day.

We just paid off one of the T/W's credit cards. I asked to see the card that evening and she got it out of her purse. I just wanted to compare it with the receipt she got showing the balance paid in full. To my total amazement, she had a small piece of paper taped to the back of the card which contained 4 digits. You guessed it, it was her PIN!! I immediately asked to see all other cards and sure enough, the same applied!! I could NOT believe it. Her response to my obvious displeasure, 'Oh, I know but it's easier that way.' My response was, 'Yeah, it's MUCH easier... for the person who steals your purse/card.'

Another trick/tip I used in the States. On the back of the card is a place for your signature so they can make a comparison to the slip you might sign. On my Stateside cards I plainly print, ASK FOR PHOTO ID rather than writing my signature. I've used this card here on a couple of occasions and when they look at it, THEY DIDN'T SAY/DO ANYTHING, just completed the purchase order. Oh well, TIT.

Reminds me of a friend who has SEE ID written at the back of his credit card.
Thus he shows ID and signs the slip.
Employee says : "signature no good"
Until he gets the message: sings slip with SEE ID :D
