Places to stay Nong Khai

If anyone asked me where to stay in Udon I have a mental list - depending on what they say their requirements are.
If they don't give any specifics (as most people don't because they know that you can read their minds & habits :D ). I would say...
Number one place - the Irish Clock. Right in the centre of most things. Good sized rooms at a reasonable rate - 850 baht - that includes a very good "English" style breakfast (or equivalent Thai from their good menu). Good place to eat generally & very good social bar..Bad points??? Not many rooms (8), can be noisy in the street outside, stairs only, not the place to meet the lady of your dreams.. :D
Number two place - joint - the Top Mansion & Ruy Suk. Both much of a sameness. Quite large places, reasonable sized rooms, excellent price (about the 350 a night room rate), both VERY clean. Both pretty central to most things (Ruy Suk farther away, but still walkable). Top Mansion area can be noisy at night & both have tiled floors so corridors can be noisy too. Neither do breakfast or meals but have good places to eat very close by.
Number three - Charoen. Still walkable to most places. A "proper" hotel with lifts and many rooms. Rooms can vary tremendously - the newer more expensive (about 950 a night) are far better & quieter. Buffet breakfast included which most guest seem to say is worth the effort to miss after 1 go at it!! Has a nightspot (Yellow Bird) which is full of young ladies most nights of the week.
Number four - The President. Too far to walk to much, but certainly in town & tuk tuk range to most things. Quite a new place & so has the benefit of that. Room rate seems to vary as they are often doing specials which seem to knock it down to the 950 ish a night. Good pool as well. Breakfast buffet included - slightly better quality than Charoen, but not much in it I gather!!

Anyone have equivalent thoughts on the available places in NK????

I suppose I would have to go with the Huan Lai apartments first on my list, as they are very centrally located, so one could walk to most local bars & restaurants, and not expensive at 400 baht, and adequate though not luxurious. :D

The Nong Khai resort being out by the railway station, is a little out of town and away from bars & restaurants, but looks presentable and has a pool. Though the price is creeping up at 600-700 baht per night. ;)

I have never stayed at the Suksant Hotel, but their location (with car park) and adjacent coffee shop, would be worth considering. That looks to be appropriate to 400-500 baht per night mark. :?

Beer Belly Billy's - is very well priced and well equipped, though the bathrooms are not en suite. At a full 2kms from the east side of Tha Sadet market you would be a bit out of town, though one wouldn't be short of food or drink on site! :D

A new place I have seen but never been inside is right on the river frontage - promenade, next door to and extending above Rolf's (Swiss) small bar adjacent to the western end of Tha Sadet market. I believe that is a rather high 700 baht per night, though rooms brand new, very well appointed and overlooking the Mekong. Lots of bars & restaurants as well as the market on your doorstep. Maybe one to approach for sponsorship Sean. ;)

I believe there are other small resorts and apartments out the back of the town, some new stuff behind the Grand Hotel, though I don't have any personal knowledge of those yet. Maybe someone else does?? :D

You probably mean the Baan Mae Rim Hotel?
Rolf is no more there, I dont know who followed him in the small shop.

Here you see my pictures of that hotel: Ban Mae Rim
