Cracks in Doors

PostAuthor: Kudjap or Bust » February 9, 2009, 10:07 am

Is there any product out there that I can use to fill in the cracks I have in a couple of my internal doors? The cracks are where the panels join. Yes I know I should have bought better doors but they have been up now for 7 or so years and have only just started cracking last year.
I think I remember a 'plastic wood' product in the UK, something that came in a tube not unlike the silicon tubes for the edges of sinks and baths. Anyone know of such a product here?

try the paint dept in global house you might find a wood filler or some thing that could be used in
place of that. you can use silicone to fill in the cracks or a caulking and paint over it

yes, global house has wood/plastic filler. buy a small can, as it does not store well.

no sense in buying expensive doors, unless you actually know the source, as i find that no wood is time dried or kilm dried, so the cracks are inevitable. i don't think i've notice too many doors without cracks/spaces from drying after produced.

It happened to us.
We bought a pair of carvd wooden doors for the balcony from the bedroom in our house we have in Bandung.
A great crack appeared on one the doors, the sun beating down on it for most of day did not help. The filler available in Thailand is inferior to the Ronseal products you have in the UK. Ronseal woodfiller comes in a range of colours.
All I could find at the time was stuff that looked like car filler. Used that and sanded it down, and then the door will require about five coats of woodstain. It takes a lot of effort, if the crack is on any of the carved areas.

Thanks guys, I didn't think I was alone with this problem. I tried a 'wood filler' of sorts product from Global House, or Homepro can't remember which, but it just cracked again. It's not the actual wood that splits it's where the panels join the outside and cross members of the frame. Maybe I didn't apply the filler properly, I'll give it another go. I tried the silicon but it showed through the stain and varnish I applied onto it....

Kudjap if you have movement (swelling/shrinkage) wood filler will not work as it will just crack again when the wood moves. I would try some acrylic caulk with silicone which is flexible and available at Home Pro and sometimes at Global. The product I am referring to goes on white but cures clear. The caulk is called Sealant B 330 and is made by Bosny. It comes in a black, white and yellow tube. This comapany has the same caulk in white so make sure you get the one which is clearly marked "goes on white dries CLEAR".

The problem with buying anything made of wood around here is that the wood is never dried properly before it is turned into a desk or door or whatever. There is only one lumber yard in the area as far as I know with a drying oven and its about 20kms outside town on the highway to Loei. It's always best to ask before you buy if the wood has been oven dried at what temperature and for how long. When the wood is taken from the oven usually after weeks of drying it needs to be turned into something fairly quickly or it will begin reabsorbing mositure from the air. Another thing to look for before you buy a door or whatever is to make sure the item is sealed with paint or polyurethane or stain/sealer on ALL sides and not just the outside.

If you go the silicon caulk route make sure you buy the paintable kind. Not all caulk is paintable.

Kudjap It may take several days for the caulk to turn clear. This particular kind of caulk IS paintable.

I had the same problem of cracks appearing on the timber treads to the staircase. when I had
the treads re varnished the decorator used wood filler which cracked in no time, so i got some
acrylic filler which comes in various wood colours to match. had no more problems.
the biggest selection of acrylic filler i found is at home pro. if the doors are going to be painted
use decorators caulk as fdimike 2 suggests

Im a bit late in this forum, but if you havent solved the problem and all else fails see if you can find some Brummer woodfillers. This is the best woodfiller available imho.

I find any locally available acrylic fillers suitable. Apply it today and paint it tomorrow. :D
