Prepaid Mobile Broadband

PostAuthor: Casper » April 10, 2009, 11:31 am

I am currently in Wait Awhile, I have noticed ads for prepaid mobile boardband over here.

I will be spending a couple of weeks in Udon in June/July. Does anyone know of any prepaid plans. I will be staying about 20 minutes from Ban Dung.

Any info would be helpful.

Depends what sort of set up you have Casper, but yes, it is available.
I used a Solomon device that plugged into a PS2 slot. Somewhat similar to this one. (but it did cost me about 6,000 baht in the Complex in Udon)

Then buy a AIS sim card (about 49 baht) & go to Televis in the Complex & buy a 1 to call internet package (which they set upon the sim). Various "packages" available - 200 baht a month gives about 80 hours on the internet & so on.

However I also understand (but have never done) that you can cut out the Solomons bit & do it all via a good mobile phone (LA is the expert on that route I think :D ). I still think you need to go the "package" route with that as well.

Top up (for next month, or current month if you run out of internet hours) is via the 1 to Call cards sold virtually everywhere.

Is there a download limit with that?

Limit is on hours only - but as it is not exactly lightening fast I guess there is a limit... :D
I think they actually do an "unlimited hours" package, but not sure how much that costs.
Not that I would recommend using it to attempt to download full movies... :D

Sure, it's not something I do anyway but I get the gist of what you're saying.

Cheers.

If you can find anything other than the normal snailband I would be most interested.

I, currently, pay A.I.S., for (supposedly) unlimited Internet use, 1068 Baht per month, which I use to connect my laptop to the internet, via (either) a SolomonSEGM 520 EDGE, linked directly to a USB port, or Nokia 3110C (Using Bluetooth).

It is, certainly, not "Broadband" and the service is rubbish - allow for disconnections every 10/15 minutes at times and when downloading (I kid you not) the speed can go as low as 67 B/s - NEVER believe any promises from a Thai telecom company, because they have not made the, necessary, investment in the infrastruture to deliver what they advertise!

What we need is a company such as Vodaphone/T Mobile/Hutchinson etc to be allowed to bid for the licences and then invest, using the latest technology!!
