She likes Iron Maiden. This is not to say that she does not like Thai music, because she does, just not the sia jai (tales of woe and heartache) songs. She also likes early Elvis, the Beatles and now has begun to like punk music (I never ask her very much about her musical tastes).
Her view is that she is a single parent and must be very strong for her son at all times and never show weakness or sadness.
This lady was a member of the Thai military (militia) for two years, raced cars in Chiang Mai and rarely shows any emotion but happiness even in the worst of times. She does not suffer fools gladly.
Her son has just turned 14 so he will not be visiting bars very soon.
However, when he does it just might be as a musician.
He studies guitar with the Yamaha group in Udonthani and just returned from their contest in Bangkok, where his group came in second in the all-Thailand popular music category (he plays lead guitar). He came in third in the all-Thailand classical guitar category.
Next year his group (most of the kids are 17-19, but he is the leader) has been invited to perform on tv shows in South Korea and Singapore.
The kid has his own fan club and the little girls like to get his autograph and have their photos taken with him.
He is also adept at computer design but plans to go to veterinarian school at Mae Joe (Chiang Mai) in the future.
He has been in contests in Udonthani, Nong Khai, Nakhon Ratchasima and Khon Kaen. The group next appears in Nakhon Ratchasima in December.
For his fans and dedicated followers, his favourite football club is Liverpool, and he does not like Thai music very much.
The Taewan Daeng in Khon Kaen was fairly well lit, like the customers, and the biggest problem for the punters was to negotiate their way around the tables to the washroom and weave their way back.
