Aznyron, I lusted after that enhanced CDMA system you're using when I was looking at options for where i live since there is no land line anywhere near. It looked to me to be faster and more reliable than the TOT ADSL I had before. But when I asked CAT about it (the people I talked to were calling it EVDO - the generic name for the system) they said the nearest antenna was in Kut Chap and I'm probably 10 or 12 km as the crow flies from there. They also said their technician had been out in the general area and couldn't measure enough signal for a reliable connection, even with an outside antenna. So I reluctantly went with the standard CDMA.

Hopefully one of these days they'll put up a tower near me and I can switch. Hopefully also, by that time it will be cheaper than the 11,000 baht they quoted me for the hookup box. Strangely, the monthly charge for my much slower connection is only 100 baht cheaper than your much better connection.

Frem it has a lot to do with how much time you spend on the P/C if I did not spend as much time I would have gone the cheaper route but living here in the boonies I need some thing and the internet is my MIA NOY I am about 6 KM from Cat dish and when they quoted you way back then things have improved
I think it would be worth a phone call or a visit when you are in udon I will P/M you with the salesman mobil number and you can decide good luck

Thanks for sending me the salesman's number, Aznyron. He said that the situation hasn't improved in Kut Chap and coverage is still limited to within 3 or 4 kms of town. But he also said there were a lot of farangs calling and wanting to sign up so maybe that will spur them to expand the coverage.

Guess I'll have to "struggle" along with my current CDMA connection. I don't really have a problem with it for normal surfing but trying to watch a flash video is kind of painful. And downloading movies takes a while. But I'd like to set up connection sharing so my wife can use the net on her PC too and it's just too slow for that.

Guess I'll wait a while longer.

Hi,
Just been reading my book on Sierra Aircard and guide to GPRS in Thailand. Slap my wrist i give the wrong info. about costs ](*,) I stated 1b per min.. In the man. it states 0.06B a min. for the package i have which you can use world wide. They have many options, one the 900B a month contract gives you 400Hrs a month about 13Hrs a day at approx. cost of 0.03B a min.
Four years ago at peak time got dropouts, this has been sorted out now and over the last 3yrs. had no dropouts. No monthly charges either. Looking at the man. Dtac uses a standing charge of 250B a month on some of there packages.
Cheers Doug.

I think you could, and it would work, but you would be charged the "normal" telephone rate when connecting to the internet, rather than the "packaged" rates that they charge. I would think it is possible to go and get the telecoms company to make your existing sim applicable for internet calls as well, but with a sim costing less than 50 baht it hardly seems worth it.

In theory yes dill - best if you take the modem with you though, saves a bit of explanation. :D It is exactly the same as a phone sim, I think they just add the internet connection phone number to it.
Or, what I did when I got mine, was take my lap top with me when I bought the modem and they set everything up for me, just for the extra cost of a sim & the 1st. months' payment of the phone package.

Same floor as all the telephone shops in the Complex, as you go up the central elevator if you look to your left there is a Phone Company shop. The name escapes me for the moment I am sorry but I am sure someone will supply it soon.... :D :D
I think you have to sign up for a year, but that is a bit of a nonsense as you actually pay by month - the sim is automatically debited - so if you decided not to use it just don't top up your sim!!! :D :D
