Rural internet connection

PostAuthor: muppet » April 25, 2009, 12:49 pm

Hello
I'm new to the forum but just managed to get connected to the internet in a vilage near Kut Chap.
I've got an "Edge" Modem (looks like a fat memory stick) and it uses a mobile phone sim card. So if anyone out there can get mobile phone reception you can get internet.
Cheers

Yes, Plugs into my laptop USB port. Cost 3,500 Barts.
I am using a Dtac sim card, because of its reception. Pre pay 200 Barts / month for 50 hours.
Can use other sim cards with other deals.

Hi,
Bought my aircard for my laptop in Pattaya four years ago, Sierra wireless aircard 750, cost me just under 10,000B with a charged up sim card, a lot cheaper now about half the price.
You put a Sim's card in it, charge sim card on Mobile phone load it into laptop. The cost to use varies depending on which tariff you are on. Mine cost me 1B a min to use but was a bit slow, still better than nothing. you can use it anywhere you can use a mobile phone in LOS.
Cheers Doug.

Muppet,

You say you're near kudjap, we too are in a village in the same vicinity, have you no access to a TOT phone line? TOT can run overhead cables to most villlages. Where are you actually?

You are correct about the cables to the villages but the system does not have the capacity for unlimited numbers hence if you live in a village you have problems getting a phone line.
They still use copper cable here not Fibre Optic like the western world.

Hi aznyron
Your system sounds like what I would like to get eventually. Does it work thru a mobile sim card as no land line here?

Hi,
Muppet, as stated in my post i bought a air card 750 over four years ago in Pattaya, this was through edge they have a shop in Patt. Tim use to come to Patt. every month and he spent a hour with me showing me how to use it, very good service. Also they made there own handbook version of a manual which explained in laymans terms how to operate it and the many options of payment. I think there are about 5 options of payment so it depends on you which you want, i choose the unlimited use, as i use computer often when I'm travelling, which costs me 1B a min., in LOS, and no other monthly charges. You can use this world wide but require a Sim card for the country you are in.
The wife should be back tomorrow so then i will be able to get into safe, can never remember combination, always go left when i should have gone right, thank god i don't drive like that. Will post the details then.
Cheers Doug.

You're exactly right Geordie but I was told by an engineer out here that Kudjap telephone exchange has recently gone through and upgrade and enhancement of number availability to cover the increase of new line requests. Probably won't quicken the process of actually getting a new line but at least they're moving in the right direction.

I second aznyron's comments above about the CAT connection. I used a CAT CDMA phone for about a year, paid 600 baht for unlimited monthly use, had reliable connections all year even during heavy rains. It wasn't as good as ADSL, but at the time, I couldn't get ADSL.

By the way, international phone calls to the US, via phonenet cards, are now just 90satang per minute. C-h-e-e-e-a-p

Muppet, be sure to tell CAT where you live if you decide to go with Aznyron's system. He must be using EVDO to get that kind of speed. I live a few kms from you in Pang Saam Gao and and wanted to use his system but EVDO signals don't reach this far. I ended up using the much slower system Parrot is talking about. The signal at my place is weak enough that I had to add an external antenna outside - 1,000 baht. Also, I had to go with a desktop USB box - 4,500 baht - instead of a mobile phone because I needed to be able to plug in the external antenna. I've been using it for about 7 months now and It's been pretty reliable. Decent for surfing but slow for big downloads, about 16 kBps. (I think Aznyron means 1,200 kbps, not kBps). I disconnect during thunderstorms because of the external antenna. But I usually shutdown and unplug my entire system during thunderstorms so that's not a big issue.

Fremmel it ovation from CDMA is what written on the box you can get up to 3.1 Mbps
it about 4 inches long (10cm) plugs in to your USB port it has a little flip antenna on it
now I do want to say I got those speeds when I hook it up to a outside antenna which is made for cat telephone internet they sell you a wire that plugs in the device and hooks up to the antenna you have to rotate the antenna to the closest micro wave dish cat has the cost was 8k plus 900 for antenna and 600
for that wire was I scammed on the wire yes but I got what I wanted also it 700 a month for the connection now they claim it will work any were in Thailand this is there claim it works on both windows / Imac I know because it hook to my Imac computer
