I gather that they are many nations ships (naval variety) in the area, but the "pirates" have changed their tactics & are now attacking ships farther away - 6 in last 7 days taken :( Problem is that they have so much money from previous attacks that they are highly armed...Don't know what the solution is,but, from what I have seen & read these "pirates" are not exactly discouraged when they land. To capture food aimed at people who are starving is, in my opinion, just about as low as you can get :( :(

as long as they keep making millions of dollars and there is no negatives i can see from being a pirate, why would they stop. the simple act of piracy/theft means you have no morals to begin with. for every ship they take, the allied navy should sink 10 of the pirates. along with any ship that sails out of somolia. maybe they will get the message. next negotiations, shoot the negotiator live on tv, then ask them to send another one, or release the ship. it seems ex pres. Carter is in charge of naval affairs in the area....................no F'g ball. next ship they take, surround it apache helicopters and with inflatables with rescue gear, then start shooting till they release the ship or sink the damn thing. the inflatables w/rescue is an attempt to save the real sailors of the ship, let the pirates drown.

do that every time and see how many more then take over.

Yeah agree Hit Them Hard..its the only language they will know.
More armed boats are needed to travel with the cargo ships which surely the shipping companies could swallow, also arm the ships just like in the old pirate days, send out a warning any unknown boat that comes within a mile will be blasted out of the water...would just add the words 'Filthy' and 'Theiving' to the heading.

Problem not helped by area needed to be policed to stop pirates. According to Yahoo news, the stretch of water is huge, four times size of Texas, or, put it another way, the Mediterranean and Red Seas put together. Thinking is, pirates made big mistake with taking US-flagged ship, with 20 US hostages. President Obama may have to be persuaded to consider even more ways of stopping the pirate scum operating so successfully. I know it is an international problem, but the US has biggest resources, and if i was a Somalian pirate, it doesn't make sense to goad US. I think, that all pirates should just be blown out the water. Total scum.

I think it arming ships has implications for insurance of the vessels, perhaps that is why it's taking a while to react, there are agencies and people connected to certain armies in the region doing intel.
Personally I would bring it home to where they live and their families, like the russians did in the seventies when they sent the testicles of the male family members of the terrorists holding russian hostages.

Agree about the size of the area Phil, but, with satellite surveillance & a bit of electronic intelligence (don't ships contain an electronic code the same as aircraft???) it should be possible to at least spot the "good" from the "others"...
I am not, normally, a great believer in force to resolve any issue but I am 100% with LA on this one...

What I have difficulty understanding, is how it has got to this point:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090408/ap_on_re_af/piracy
14 ships, 260 crew held by Somali pirates

By The Associated Press The Associated Press – 33 mins ago

The International Maritime Bureau says 260 crew on 14 hijacked ships are being held off the coast of Somalia, including the U.S.-flagged ship seized Wednesday, the Maersk Alabama and its crew of 20 U.S. nationals.

The other ships include:

• Turkish tanker Karagol, seized in November carrying 4,500 tons of chemicals and 14 Turkish personnel.

• Bulk carrier African Sanderling and its 21 Filipino crewmen, seized in October.

Organizations tracking global piracy trends said Somalia recorded the highest number of attacks in recent years in 2008. The most prominent of the hijackings were:

• Saudi supertanker Sirius Star, which was hijacked in November and released in January. The pirates at the time reportedly received $3 million to release the tanker even though they initially had asked for $25 million. However, five of the Somali pirates drowned with their share of the ransom money after their small boat capsized during a storm.

• Ukrainian freighter MV Faina, which was hijacked in September with 20 crew members. It was released in February after pirates holding the ship said they received $3.2 million in ransom. The ransom was paid after protracted negotiations, which saw even Ukrainian relatives of the crew members fundraise among themselves at one point because they felt their government was not doing enough.

I think, that all pirates should just be blown out the water.

Safety in numbers...why don't the cargo ships travel together, sinking the pirate boats is the only option..let them finish in a watery grave being eaten by the seas creatures..let them put something back in the world by feeding the marine life of the region, i reckon none of them can swim either.

Disagree with US "interference'"..Everybody screams about the US being the world's policeman. The vast majority of the ships there and shipping in general are not US owned, registered, crewed, or insured. Let the Greeks, Italians, Koreans, Japanese, Saudis, etc. provide their own security or pay the damm ransom. Or wait, I've got a better idea, let's let the UN talk the pirates to death. or maybe they can issue a white paper "decrying the actions taken by the pirates". There is no way this can be prevented until the individual ships have professional armed security teams aboard while in these waters. The pirate boats are too small and the area is too big.

if you listen about the rumors of where the somalian pirates are getting their funding from - and who is aiding them with the sophisticated means to take these ships - and their expertise in getting away with the money - and then the way they continue to apply their trade after a $80m haul - i think the real culprit is not some half daft with a somalian passport wearing an AK47 and a pair of flip flops - it's someone else - the UN cargo of food aid to somalia and uganda will still get there unharmed once the ransom for the ship and hostages has been paid for - the pirates "goodies" as such is not 50 ton of ground maize (whatever), if the press report said that the ship contained second hand toyota corrolas and windows 95 software destined for mombasa there wouldn't be quite the same impact.
I got a feeling the thieving scumbags have bitten off more than they can chew this time though - let's hope so.

Japanese

Have indeed supplied naval ships to the region in order to try & protect ships LL. Which is a major shift in Japanese policy, as it is VERY difficult (under their constitution) to offer offensive action outside Japan.
This is one policy (after all the "policeman" policies under the GWB administration) that extremely few world governments would disagree needs sorting and would be happy for assistance.
But, of course, the USA is perfectly entitled not to offer assistance (which at the moment it certainly is) which would only reinforce world opinion that "world policeman" status only applies when "special interests" (like oil) are involved.... :(
"Paying the dam ransom" is what has elevated it to the current status but what other option do law abiding countries (like Ukraine) have without outside assistance.

BobH,,, the main gist of my thought is that many maritime nations have a dog in this fight and have benefited for years by very low portions of their GDP going to naval forces or armed forces in general. They plowed their funding into social programs or whatever, that was their call. The US taxpayers have footed the bill for defense with a higher proportion of GDP spending.,,,,
You are correct,, there are many nations providing naval security forces in this area now but the emphasis should be greater from those maritime nations with a bigger stake. It's semantics whether the Japanese involvement should be considered offensive or defensive. I think they would be defending their national interests, much less their shipping.
Your statement "But, of course, the USA is perfectly entitled not to offer assistance (which at the moment it certainly is) which would only reinforce world opinion that "world policeman" status only applies when "special interests" (like oil) are involved...". is double edged. Maybe Americans think others want to kick the US until they need someone to provide some security or act decisively.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
December 2008.

The international effort to stop piracy off Somalia has not worked and the effort clearly needs to be stepped up into a higher gear.

The response so far has been twofold: first, to assemble naval forces to try to stop the pirates on the high seas; second, to encourage a political settlement within the fractured state of Somalia to enable law and order to be established.

The naval forces are growing all the time. There is already a small flotilla of warships in the region from the US, UK, Canada, France, Turkey, Germany, Russia and India, among others.

This shows how the world's trading powers regard the piracy as a joint threat.

There has been some success. The warships have established a safe shipping lane and escort food aid ships into Somalia. The Royal Navy recently shot and killed two pirates and captured others. The French staged a daring capture of pirates who had taken over a yacht. The Indian navy has thwarted two attempted hijacks, though the pirates in both cases got away. (Update 19 November: The Indian Navy reports that it has sunk a pirate ship which refused to stop. Further update 26 November: it is now reported that the 'pirate' ship was in fact a Thai fishing boat.) to read the rest click on BBC link...
