My wife says this snake is very poisonous and that anyone who sees this snake in day light hours has bad luck coming to them. In Thai it's name is something like TAPAO.....

That snake is a Xenochrophis piscator or Chequered Keelback (even though our regional variation is not 'chequered'). Also known as a keel-back because of the keeled (ridged) scales on its back, which become smother (but still keeled to some degree) to the lateral/ventral surfaces. Although it is rear-fanged, it should be considered harmless. A bee's venom is far more powerful and dangerous. It eats a large variety of prey and as its species designation 'piscator' indicates, it is known to eat fish, along with amphibians, reptiles, small birds and mammals that it can overpower and consume.

If anyone gets captures one, please contact me via PM and I will pick it up and take it away. I am currently doing research on the systematics of this genus.

The snake's Thai name is Ngoo Lai Sor. Ngu Tang Maprao is Coelognathus radiatus, a highly aggessive, but completely harmless type of ratsnake that has lines radiating from the eyes (like Xenochrophis piscator), but also has a pair of dorsal-lateral black lines on the anterior portion of its copper/brown body.

Unless it is a Naja siamensis (Spitting Cobra), you can consider any snake that is actively moving about during the day in the Udon Thani as harmless. Ophiophagus hannah (King Cobra), which can be found in this region and is diurnal (active in the daytime) is a very shy snake and is difficult to find even in the forest.

Some thai chap told me if a snake moves fast its not dangerous, if it moves slow then it IS dangerous. Theory being, I guess, is that slow moving snakes rely on venom for food and survival.

Not a good 'theory', cfcmik'. Most Thai elapids (venomous snakes that possess neurotoxic venom) move fast and are among Thailand's deadliest snakes.

Only last week our dog chased a snake out of the garden during mid day, about same size as the one on the image and also with black lines on the body, but more grey color instead of the brown from this one.

Bugger was very fast and aggressive, snapping a few times at the dog, almost jumping through the air but our dog seemingly knew enough about snakes to keep out of the way and out of reach. Finally it disappeared in the bushes and we couldn't find it again.

According my wife it was 'very dangerous' but they say that about every snake they see, I had the impression that it was some variety of ratsnake and thus non-poisonous but I had no intention of trying to find out

Next time I keep the camera handy, but those things are really fast and usually you have enough other things on your hands. You don't see them very often, been living here now for almost 5 years and this was only the second time, suppose most of the time they get out of your way, only at night I'm a bit more careful about walking through the garden in darkness. Stamping your feet helps, they say, so far I believe them

To put a people a little more at ease, most of those venomous snakes listed DO NOT reside in Udon Thani. Of the 56 venomous snakes listed, only 10 species reside in Udon Thani. Thailand is made up of a number of zoogeographical regions and many species only reside in those specific regions, with the highest density of venomous snake species being found in peninsular (Southern) Thailand. The only venomous species that are found in Udon Thani are on a thread that I started which has now been moved to the 'Notice Board' forum.
venomous-snakes-of-udon-thani-t13053.html

Of note in the 'non-poisonous snake' link above, is that Rhabdophis subminiatus is listed 'non-poisonous/mildly-poisonous', when it is in fact potentially deadly as are all members of the Rhabdophis genus (the others just do not bite often) and to make matters worse- there is no anti-venin made for that genus!

MC,

Thanks for posting the photos on the other thread, very informative. As I have 2 young kids I often wondered if there were any dangerous snakes lurking in our garden. I feel more at ease now after reading your post. Also, found the following snake in my wife's garden, it scared the crap out of her while she was tending to her orchids. I figure it's a rat snake variety, any ideas as to what it is?

The snake in your picture is Oligodon fasciolatus (Banded Kukri Snake). This is a non-venomous snake and will be no problem if it is left alone. They do not get aggressive (defensive) if left alone. They are extremely difficult to handle because the head is indistinct (between the head and neck where snakes are safely grabbed). To make matters worse, if it is grabbed (or bites if you corner it), its bite is very nasty. It has a pair of enlarged teeth behind the eyes (like fangs, but again, it is not venomous), which move independently. Most snake teeth puncture, but these enlarged teeth cut like a knife (name kukri comes from the Gurkha's knife) and the wound/slashes inflicted by these teeth take some time to heal.

Hi

I was on the laptop a few days ago and I saw out the corner of my eye a movement. Looked over and what do I see but a snake  inside the house and only 2 m away, about 1.5 metres long , slim, silver greenish in colour but alas no picture (Not that quick at thinking).

Of course I jumped to my feet and went out the front door as I was home alone and have no experience with snakes. On the way to heading out the back to find more persons to converse with I checked in the side window and it was still there. Bu the time I found someone and came back it was knoewhere to be seen.

Could'nt believe the style of search that took place. On hands ond knees reaching under and behind anything that might hide a snake.. A side door was found open and it was assumed it went out the way it came in. There are many snakes out here and I treat them all the same. So many squashed on the road out here, a new batch every day.
