Some avitars - acceptable or not? & other off topic stuff

PostAuthor: Mainer » March 22, 2008, 11:09 pm

While I was reading the Udonmap forum posts today, some children pointed at my screen and had some comments. They, of course were looking at some of the avitars. They probably think I was browsing some 'other kind' of website.

I have to agree that some seem to be a bit over the edge for general viewing. Some might think that this forum is for men, because it is mainly posted by men, but women do read it and occasionally post on here. I am not making mention to anyone in particular, but, having to minimize the page or cover up 'some' of the avitars, when children are present... hmmmmm..??

Many read this at internet shops or restaurants and perhaps the farang reputation is being lowered yet again. We should also not forget that this is being read all over the world.

I like a naked body as much as the next guy, but when they focused their attention on my screen, it did make sit up and take notice. Perhaps the moderators can police this?

I have to agree with the sentiment. I would not open this website on a computer in a public space, or on my patio for that matter. That goes for some other forums that serve Expats in Thailand as well.

Also agreed - there is something about the female form that is very pleasing, but that is not the only thing I think about ( I am not 25 years old any more :D)

Mainer, in the UK we have a newspaper called "The Sun", each day they display a young ladies ample charms on Page 3.
The Sun has been the biggest selling newspaper for many years, in my youth I thought nothing of it other than comparing todays lady with yesterdays.
Some ladies have made extremely lucrative careers from this and I say more power to them.
The risque avitars are light hearted and should be viewed as such.

I must admit to sympathising/agreeing with Mainer's point. I hadn't really thought of it before (I usually use my PC at home), until I was using some Internet shops in NK and Udon and saw the Avatar I was using at the time, and thought what casual observers might think.

As a guilty party I will keep that point in mind and adjust my choice of Avatar accordingly. :D

Has anyone come up with a "click through avatar" (maybe it would have a small blinking x or three) all the decency on the outside then you could just click on the avatar for more "in depth viewing" so to speak. Just an idea.

Yes, I go along with this idea, I'm as liberal as anyone, but I too have been a little embarresed when I've been in the internet shops in UT and the youngsters have been hanging around. At home I've no problem with them, in fact look for the "best" , but I think the above idea from tigerryan is a good one, much better than banning or censoring them.

US Supreme court Justice Potter Stewart made a quote something to the effect that "I don't know that I can describe pornography but I know it when I see it, and when its good I like it a lot" ( I added the last part). Possibly the moderator could replace the potentially risky avatar with one of Maggie Thatcher or Janet Reno then you could just click through on the x and see the goods on their kids (Posh Spice and Chelsea Clinton) or some sort of graphics mapping software to measure the size of the breast and then and appropriate ratio of covering could be used something like b -c = wood square (no charge for the complex math and code writing). I have exhausted myself on this issue Im keeping my naked avatar of the Pillsbury Doughboy up. :D :D

As a newbie I must admit to thinking that some of the older members must have had a nutritionally deprived childhood judging by the obsession with large mammary glands. From what I have seen some of the fatter contributors have much bigger themselves. You may guess, I am a believer in the saying" More than a handful is a waste"Back to the point. I don't find the avatars offensive, but I do think they reveal a certain immaturity about the users.

I am honestly trying to recall a avatar that I would consider offensive, and I can't!!!!!!!!!.

They are meant to be taken lightheartedly, you see far worse every day on billboards, in newspapers and on TV, so whats the fuss about?

And as for revealing a certain immaturity, words fail me :yikes:

It would be interesting to hear if the lady formulites find these avatars offensive.

Truebrit, your not related to Mary Whithouse are you? :D :D :D

PS, Well put KENN

remember we are adults, and in some contries, well the states, some pics used would be in brown paper wrappers and sold behind the counter. i have a rather nice miniscreensaver, that i disable at night market and some eateries, depending on cliental. also my desktop changes quite often, and i will revert back to WBU when in public setting.

what we think, and what the parents of a 10 yr old think are entirely different. common sense should prevail.
