Spamming

PostAuthor: Franco » August 15, 2008, 1:12 pm

Have noticed over past couple of weeks I'm getting alot of Thai worded Spam,

As Udonmap is the only Thai Site/Forum that has access to my email address, I'm guessing that my mail address was obtained from bogus enquiries to my adds posted here or a PM sender. Or, maybe from Udonmap Staff?

Has/Is anyone experiencing the same problem?

Now that you come to mention it...

I have had an increase in the number of Thai script e-mails in the last couple of weeks, after having none for a whole year of living in Thailand!

I've (& my email address) been on Udonmap for nearly 3 years now. Until a week ago I have never received any. I have received 2 in the last week. To conclude the address was got from udonmap is, in my opinion, more than a bit of a stretch of the imagination. If I was a Thai spammer then a Falang orientated website would hardly be my first (or last) port of call.
Spammers have plenty of tool available to them to find email addresses :(
p.s. certain mail providers seem to "attract" more spam than others.
I have a hotmail ID which I use most of the time & it attracts very few spam mails - 90% of which hotmail spots as a spam. I also have a Yahoo ID (which I rarely use) & that attracts about 40 spams a day - again 90% of which Yahoo correctly identifies for me.

Think there are webcrawler programs which scour forum sites for
email addresses to add to spam lists. Seriously doubt if udonmap
has anything to do with this. The PM method of contacting people
adds some a layer of insulation to your privacy. The more you use
email and register with sites the more junk you get. It's unavoidable.

Like BH said, spammers have the software to find out a lot about who, what, where and how. There is software that tells spammers, what operating system you are operating, what kind of computer (HP, Compaq or Dell), what page of the webpage you started at, how long you stayed on that page, what page you went too from the previous page, and what website you went to from the previous webpage and more info. I have seen it from a friend of mine that does webpages. Just think for a moment what the big advertisement companies have and the spammers have are the same. They get all kinds of information from. Also if you click on "Remember Me"....well guess that is where the got your email from, it's saved on your computer.

Franco if you are using Firefox as your browser you might want to consider downloading the (free) WOT program. It "rates" any webpage you want to visit for Trustworthiness, Vendor Reliability, Privacy and Child safety. Not foolproof but certainly can warn about sites - especially after Googling for some information.

Thanks for all the info gents,

I'm not the brightest spark when it comes to the internet, by process of elimination thought to check to see if any other forumites had the problem first. I have a hotmail address and I am the only user, this is the first time it has happened to me, where I cannot identify the sender.

Although the text is in Thai the mail address is in English ie: (Bigarch noreply@example.com). It is not a big problem at the moment as it's only one or two a day. As Grasshopper says, I've been clean for a year or two and I have only just started to recieve them.

My wife uses Thai web sites quite often and we have even bought CD's and a Thai English keyboard which was shipped to us here in Oz and have not had Thai spam at all. However, if I go to a porn site even for one minute for a quick peek I get 40 the following day  baskets

It's not udonmap.com for sure. If you have ticked the box to hide your email address in your profile then neither visitors or web bots can pick up your email address from the forum.

I have recieved a couple of Thai spam emails myself in the last couple of weeks also, but our email address is a little more public so I guess that's to be expected.

All I can say is be careful where you submit your private info, but rest assured your email address is safe on here.

Has anyone tried Mailwasher Pro from Firetrust. This programme tells you what mail is on your mail server and then you can decide whether or not to download to to your computer.

It lets you build up a 'friends list', and a 'blacklist', and generally eventually teaches itself what is likely spam ot not. I find it a very good progamme for preventing unwanted spam getting to your PC

I've had quite an increase in junk mail recently, and yes, some I noticed was in Thai language. I just delete it all (without opening or reading it).
