St. George's Day

PostAuthor: westerby » April 24, 2009, 1:03 am

Did anyone from Udon side's English contingent celebrate St. George's Day?

23rd April is also William Shakespeare's birthday.

I raised the English flag on the yard for St georges day, thought about many many dinners to celebrate had abeer and went to sleep.
So often in the UK we subscribe to being nice to the extent we are losing our National ID, it is a shame that the so-called politically correct, stop even small actions.
Now it appears that any outwardly show of Englishness or anything else not foreign is frowned upon.
I can only say when i was there I flew the Union Flag and on the saints days George, Andrew, patrick etc, flew those flags as well, no one ever complained, many thanked me.
One could start something here, I used to beleong to the Royal society of St george but their costs were horrendus, but if we start here, we would need to have St patrick; s, St ASndrew;s and the Wlesh national day comlete with leeks.
Good ideas oftern spawn antinationalistic tendencies, so lets chose a day we could celebrate being British, the Aussies have Anzac day the americans have the 4th of July, we need a British day, ANY IDEAS? . A time when we can all get together and celebrate the fact . Any day would do, as we have so many days which include one or more of our co-joined smaller countries but not all. So a day not used for anything else would do, I am sure we could find one.

I had a few beers with some of Udon's undesirables in a way of celebration. Sadly its was a bit like the UK where the day is generally ignored. Apparently Shakespear was a ****** son of an Irishman but im sure someone will correct me if im wrong.

Pancake Day.
Guy Fawkes Day.
Boxing Day.
Mazey Day/Midsummer's Day.
St. Patrick's Day (he was born in England, not like St. George).
Candlemas Day.

Well we could have easter day ( not celebrated here at all) or even the longest day June 21st, also helps us to remember the film by the same name which was the beginning of the end of WW11, any more ideas.

I'm totally ignorant of this subject but please allow me to ask a question. It would seem very appropriate to celebrate a Magna Carta Day..... Is it acknowledged at all? We learned in school as youngsters that it was a very significant event, even impacting us as Americans. Cheers, LL

No LL it is not celebrated in any way in the UK - not even sure if it is taught in history lessons in most schools any more. Although the jury is still out as to whether it was the "blow for liberty" against an unjust king or a "doling out of favours amongst the most powerful in the land".
The blow for justice usually gets the press but there were more barons than the king so I think it is a case of the winners writing history.
November 5th. would get my vote as a day to celebrate but, sadly, Guy Faulkes failed in his efforts - fewer & fewer honourable men have entered Parliament since that date....until we have the farce that exists today.

I personally and probably alone on this one celebrate Tynwald Day on the 5th of July no matter where I am. For those who are unaware it is a celebration of the earliest known government and was started by Vikings on the IOM.
I was raised there and it has a meaning for most celts as its where it all started and continues to this day.
Is that a record ? where are the mcwhirters when you need them. :D

Ah its all to come! Boris has a FREE concert inTrafalgar Square 12.30-6pm on Saturday, 25th. =D> There's Bishi there, Seth Lakeman, and, there's violinist Eliza Carthy, and some others. I have not heard of them, but anyway at the tube we have to have extra staff in for the rush! Well only 2 extra, actually. But there was also morris dancers in Covent Garden on 23rd, and, a St George's flag raised at City Hall as well on the 23rd. :D So, Boris has kept his word to raise profile of St George's Day, hasn't he? :?

Good old Boris, Westers likes Boris, he's a character and you don't get many of them anymore. I asked what people at work thought of St. George's Day and one of the answers I got was that the English flag is synonymous with football hooliganism and racism - that came from a youngster. A chap in his fifties replied, saying it was a shame that the PC Brigade had perpetuated such an idea. I'm not sure I've got an answer to any of that but interesting views all the same.

Yes i voted for Boris and think he is still great. Ken had gone mad after 8 years! I think Boris did more than Ken for St George's Day, and it is only his first year. There was celebration Shakespears birthday at the Globe Theatre, and a knights battle re-enacted, plus other things, and the free concert as well, of course. My only personal worry about Boris is unlike Ken, he doesn't travel the tube and may well take on Bob Crow and the RMT! Popular with all Londoners except tube workers of course. Mind you if he offers voluntary severance to us, great, i'll be off to Thailand! :D
