BANGKOK - A SWISS woman was found dead on a Thai beach along the Andaman coast on Thursday, police said, though the cause of death was not immediately clear.

They said the body of Edith Jungen, 40, had been found in shallow water early Thursday by a villager in Ao Nang bay in Krabi province, 814 kilometres from Bangkok.

'There are no major cuts on her body but a few bruises on her face. We have sent her body for an autopsy,' case officer Lieutenant Colonel Wittaya Meklai told AFP by telephone.

He said Jungen had arrived at a local hotel on Tuesday and checked out a day later before she was found dead. Her body was found not far from the hotel.

In January Thai police arrested a local man for the murder of a female German tourist who was killed during a notorious full moon party on a beach in southern Thailand.

Despite its reputation as a holiday paradise, Thailand has seen a series of tourist murders in recent years, including the shooting deaths of two Russian women whose bodies were found slumped on deck chairs in Pattaya in 2007. -- AFP

Swiss Tourist's Body Found on Krabi Beach

By Phuketwan Reporters
Thursday, May 7, 2009
THE discovery of the body of a Swiss woman on a Krabi beach has struck another blow to the Andaman tourist industry at a difficult time.

The woman, named by police as Edis Jurger, aged 41, was found face down on Nopparatara beach, near Ao Nang, at 6am today.

A tourist, she was staying nearby at the Andaman Sunset Hotel from May 5.

She checked out on the evening of May 6, and her body was found on the beach early the following day.

Her movements between the time she checked out and when her body was found have yet to be determined, Police Lieutenant Witaya Maksoi of Krabi Town police station told Phuketwan this evening.

The manager of the hotel, also from Switzerland, told police that Miss Jurger did not seem to be behaving normally when she was last seen at the hotel.

The Governor of Krabi, Siwa Sirisoawaluk, confirmed the circumstances of the woman's death.

He said her body would be examined thoroughly, but no signs of a struggle were visible at the scene.

He said that the death of Ms Jerger came, coincidentally, with two tourist deaths in unusual circumstances on Phi Phi, the holiday island that is also part of Krabi province.

All three deaths were being thoroughly investigated, Governor Siwa said.

The coincidental deaths were no sign that Krabi was an unsafe place for tourists, he added.
