Thai ID Card

PostAuthor: Kudjap or Bust » September 13, 2007, 4:08 pm

My TW's ID card ran out on the 5th of this month and she went to the government office today to renew. She came back with a bill for 1,800 Baht for a new card.
Does anyone now if this is right or if they're ripping her off? To me its a bit steep.

Thanks PapaG, I have spoken with a couple of local falangs and their wives tell me no more than 200 bht........... "no more than" is a very Thai way of putting things don't you think...

Do you/your wife know what government department ID renewal comes under? People here just say the office by the klong.......

Thanks Doug, this is a more realistic price........now I have just realised also she has changed her address from her Mothers home to ours, wonder if thats worth the extrs 1,790 bht...

I think I need to go visit the government office here in Kudjap with her tomorrow to see what the bill's all about.............

In case I need it can anyone tell me the address for the office in Udon that houses the government department for this.

Any Thai citizen can get or renew their ID card at the Udon Thani govt office on the 2nd floor of the Chareonsrl grand shopping centre. Its next door to the Easy Buy shop. The staff there are extremely helpful but unfortunately don,t speak English
I think your problem stems from the change to issuing biometric cards two years ago. In 2547 all citizens were told they had a year to apply for the new style card after which if they hadn,t done so a penalty would incur. However owing to technical problems it wasn,t possible for all offices to do this, so some places let it run for another 6 months. It is possible your wife wasn,t aware of this and is therefore being "fined"Just a suggestion if your card was lost and you were applying for a replacement!!!

my wife had her ID card stolen a couple of years ago!She had not changed to the new card at the time and when she went to the police station in Nong Khai,it cost her 40 baht! Her best friend had her ID card stolen and went to the same police dept.,it cost her 20 baht!
The difference is probably that her last name is still Thai ,my wifes last name is Smith

both the ex, before new id's issued and Ree, after new id's issued, both for name change, and to updated to new computer chip id, and both were ridicuously inexpensive, that 20 baht range, and i think that was just for the new pics.

Val is back, nice to hear from you, and i also remember the same, one yr to renew, with extensions for those amphurs that had set up or inventory problems.

1800 seems really steep for a fine or expense for a local, especially for something required for them to do. maybe you could just ask at a different amphur and see if the 'fine' the same amount and for what reason, just a fine or if not done when supposed to, maybe a small fine and then a fee for the actual expense of new hi-tech id. curoius myself.

Same here, TW had to change her ID card 3 times, no fee was paid. I also remember about the updating to new ID cards but the wife is still with the older style ID card. Seems they came in to a short supply of the paper to make the new ID card or computer chip.

Val welcome back......you were missed.

OK, I contacted the government office in Udon, real nice lady and very helpful, she offered to meet me and the TW at the Kudjap office to clear things up. She agreed 1,800 bht is a ridiculous fee. Actually said it will be no more than 150 bht for new card, change of address, photos and admin, there goes that 'no more than' again.

Also the bill my wife bought home isn't written on official headed paper or an invoice with government stamp on it......... Plus TW only mentioned this morning the lady in the Kudjap office offered to reduce the fee to 1,000 bht if TW took her and 2 others to lunch....Me thinks someone in Kudjap office in deep Poo Poo this afternoon

Wow, 1800 baht, that seem way out of line, especially since in represents half a months wages for most locals. The ex had id change a couple times, basically name change, and Ree had id change, 1st name, then shortly after, upgrade to hi-tech id, both for nominal fees of 20 or so baht, which include new pics taken at amphur office for newer id.

Aussieboy.........If she wants a new dress and shoes she goes to the ATM, we have a joint account and she's got her own card, and I must say she's real good with it...

Anyway, went to the Kudjap office yesterday PM, a red faced little girlie was ushered into an office with the lady from Udon......10 mins later the TW was issued with an official bill / receipt and paid 156bht......... maybe still a bit on the high side but a whole lot better than the original.......... The Udon lady apologised and asked if all is now OK, "well, yes I guess so" was my reply. I asked of the Kudjap girlie and why the original bill was 1,800 bht and was told, "it will be dealt with, do not worry yourself"

"OK thank you" of we went.................
