i extended(5yrs) for my Mrs at Royal Thai Embassy in London 15mths back no problems, after she has had one extension,10 years in total i think a new passport is issued.
They just stamped 'Extended till *******.
took a couple of weeks.
Just get your thai partner to give them a call see exactly whats needed(my tw had to get some documents sent from thailand), have read on here(in Thai also)

She got a copy of birth cert,ID, and house reg...but do check with thai embassy first.

Regarding the indefinate leave to remain stamp/visa...just asked a t/friend and they did'nt get the visa transfered but kept the old thai passport(with a corner cut off)carrys it with the new one and just shows that if she has too, has had no problems over the years.
Again check with embassy.
