Thai passport problems with Lao Immigration

PostAuthor: BKKSTAN » April 30, 2008, 3:01 pm

I remember reading something about Thai passports on the forum, but I couldn't find the topic!

My wife made a run to the duty free store with a friend Monday the 28th!

When she got back, she told me that The Lao Immigration told her that her passport expired already. She was able to convince them to let her go to the store with her friend without paying the 500 baht they were asking for!

We are going to Khon Kaen tomorrow,so I told her we could get a new passport there.

When I looked at her passport,I noticed that it expires Oct 26,2008!So,I am guessing that the Lao gov't doesnt want aliens in their country with less than 6 months left on their passport and that is what he meant when he told her that her passport had expired!

I have never been to the passport office in KK,so I would appreciate all information and the location! Thanks

re passport

I was under the impression that you weren't supposed to travel unless you had at least 6 months on your passport, but going to that duty-free is pushing it a bit- sounds like a money grab to me

As for the KK passport office, i know it's amoungst the government biuldings but couldn't describe exactly how to get there, but I can tell you to get there very early unless you want to spend all day waiting.
My white face (and wallet) helped me jump the que a bit and saved me spending the night there and returning in the morning.

Stan, I was there a few months ago and all that was needed was a current Id. It would not be a bad idea to have your house book but it was not required. No photos required as they take a digital pic there. Cost, 1030 Baht I think (Close to that amount, includes postage) and they will post it out in about 4 days.

Get there early

John

Thanks all!maybe I won't do it tomorrow if it will take to long.

We were leaving NK at 0900 with another couple to do the buffet at the Sofitel Hotel and I planned on going to the passport office after lunch!

What do you think my finishing time would be if I get there at 1300?

Stan have a look at my recent report on TV here:

Some of the information is superfluous, but much of it is relevant.
