No passport of any kind is needed for a stay of up to three days. What Bob describes is the touts at the bridge. Before going to the bridge, stop off at the government office on the main road into town, it is located just before the first set of traffic lights in a building that houses the Tourist office as well. Show them your ID card and pay 20bht, They will issue a temporary travel document(2copies) valid 3 days.The fee includes the necessary photo copies. It also has the added advantage of being able to walk straight through the passport control point, saving some considerable delay at peak times.Forgot to mention. No photos are required as they copy your ID card with the photo on it.
