What is required to cross into Lao's for a couple of nights for a thai person ,Paperwork etc

If the Thai person has a Thai passport then nothing & can stay for up to a month I believe.
If no passport then a "temporary" paper passport can be obtained from just about any of the travel agents in Nong Khai. Cost varies from shop to shop but somewhere between 100 & 120 baht. Thai person needs to produce their ID card in order to obtain a temporary passport (and probably a couple of passport photos as well - although some shops will "take" a photo from the ID card). I think this passport is good for a 3 day visit to Laos - VERY quick exit & entrance into Thailand on one of these...

No passport of any kind is needed for a stay of up to three days. What Bob describes is the touts at the bridge. Before going to the bridge, stop off at the government office on the main road into town, it is located just before the first set of traffic lights in a building that houses the Tourist office as well. Show them your ID card and pay 20bht, They will issue a temporary travel document(2copies) valid 3 days.The fee includes the necessary photo copies. It also has the added advantage of being able to walk straight through the passport control point, saving some considerable delay at peak times.Forgot to mention. No photos are required as they copy your ID card with the photo on it.

yes, the touts do give themselves a nice commission. all they do is take the exact paperwork to same office, distribute funds, and return with a smile. never use touts for your farang visa, too easy and cheaper on the other side.
