Does anyone know of any software I can download on my PC, so that after I have typed out an e-mail I can convert or send it in Thai?

I assume that you have "Windows". You need to enable multi language support then you will be prompted to pick a character set. I think that windows has two for Thai. Help can get you to the area to enable multi language support. You then switch languages by pressing the "left shift" key and then the "alt key". This will switch you between english and Thai in most languages including all of the popular microsoft office products.

However, I can type on my computer email in Thai using hotmail but for some reason they do not get transmitted in Thai and when Waen gets them she can not read them. Resembles a bunch of garbage. If I want to send her an email in Thai I have to type it in word then print it out, scan it and send as a picture attachment.

Thanks for the advice, but you are talking to an original Ludite here. If I had my way all PC's would be scrapped and we would be back to quill and paper.

I'll perserve, but don't hold out much hope.

I didn't quite explain the process clearly before so I'll fill in the gaps here.

Click "help" and then in the search box type in "multilanguage support" A list of help articles will come up. just click on them until you get the one that tells you how to enable it and then select the character set. I think that the correct on is the one that is way way way down the list and not the first Thai character set that you come to on the list.

So yorkman, you could read that? My biggest problem with useing my computer to type Thai is that I keep forgetting to buy a Thai keyboard when I am there so I have to switch to Thai then "hunt and peck and backspace/delete" to get the words correct.

BTW, I have been thinking of getting that tattooed on me somewhere but Waen tells me not to. I hope that this doesn't mean that she has plans of dumping me at some point in the future and cares enough for me that she doesn't want to see me at a later time with it blanked out or having to struggle to find another wife named Waen. LOL

Also, Waen's family decided that I needed a new name and I am now known as "Pethong" in Ban Sangkam.

The old Forum had a section on translation to Thai, but I never retained one of the websites that were recommended. My memory on this is probably off, but it seemed to me to be Polehawk who posted one that looked pretty darn good.

Another member of the old Forum--Mudshark--suggested this website. I haven't tried it out, however, so cannot give it a review. It is dominantly in Thai, but it does have English in what amounts to sub-titles. The best description on how to use it is in the "Q & A" section--to locate this, test the links at the top with your cursor by holding it over the Thai description, and the English translation of the menu item will appear.

Wansman idea is great. I am no computer nerd, nor my partner, but we were able to get this computer running both falang and thai.
You also need a thai/falang keyboard. An RF transmission type will cost about 900 baht in Thailand. A good investment. I think they should be buyable in most falang countries with high thai populations.

Suparsit is a great site but unless you can read thai, then you can get into a little strife with what you think may be honest transcript.
I used to use Suparsit by itself but then learnt some lessons courtesy of this site

Basically open two windows and use suparsit to translate from falang to thai then click and paste into thai2english to check what suparsit has given you is correct. For example try typing "your ...something or rather" into suparsit and then drop it into thai2english and see what you get. Thai2english romanisers and falangs so it is a great way to also learn to speak a bit more thai. You can then go back into suparsit to make adjustments or change the sript to get it to make sense.

Once you have done that you then come up with a problem. You have thai script but if you do not have windows running on thai script then as Wansman said the receiver will end up with a heap of jargon. However there is a simple way around this. If your computer is only running falang then get someone to email you a word doc containing thai script. (I have them if you want them) Keep that thai doc as a template (and also put a copy of it away safely for when everything goes wrong) and as you get your thai script correct from suparsit then paste it into the thai script doc template. Do not delete the original thai script until you have entered some new thai script or it will default back to falang.

When you have finished your document just add it as an attachment to an email.

An after thought. Instead of thinking totally as we sometimes do of trying to communicate to a thai girlfriend in thai, think of this for anybody with a thai girlfriend who has a little computer literacy and wants to have you understand her via email.

My partner never used thai2english as from the moment we started "courting" she wanted to learn falang and sat with a dictionary to painfully translate my emails. Plus the early version of thai2english was a bit rugged. Mike the site owner did a major upgrade a few years back and the site translates thai to falang better than all the falang to thai sites.

Suggest the site to your thai girlfriend. Some of the steps in the previous message may have to be followed in reverse. She might surprise you with her ability to have you understand her.

I have some software on my computers here that the girls use to translate English to Thai. It's about 2.7 megs, if you want I can email it to you. I have copied the Thai and sent it hotmail with no problems. It's called Power Translator and it is a beta software.

If you are using Win XP... when you change language to Thai, the onscreen keyboard will change to Thai fonts too.
