The +447797806021 mystery?

PostAuthor: Sugarfree » September 30, 2006, 8:47 pm

Until only recently evry time I got an sms from my girlfriend in Thailand her own number shown up as the sender (with her nickname of course). But recently the sender id is this number: +447797806021, with her own number only been seen in the message box itself?

I have googled this +447797806021 number and this seems to happen with other folks also, one guy in the Panama for example. People are asking about this curious issue but nobody seems to know the answear. One guy suggested this was somekind of a spyware while another suggested it meant that the reciever (me in this case) was actually paying for the sms the sender (her) was sending.

I havenดt tried asking my girlfriend about this, since she will propably not understand what I was talking about.

Has any of you UdonMap farangs had same experince? Anyone know what this +447797806021 id is and what it means?

I only know that the +44 code is for the UK, the rest of the number then looks like a UK mobile number.

its a text service only,as the nice sounding girl says, i think they use these numbers to relay sms messages from other country's, and the provider must get a small cut of the cost.

Is she sending the message direct from her phone, or via an SMS service on a computer (eg you can send an SMS from Skype). I do this, and my tilak gets a "strange" number showing on her phone - but I am not sure if it is the +44 number you quote.

44 is the country, the next digit, in this case 7 is the service provider, in this example not British Telecom. This same numbering system applies if you purchase and use the numerous discount cards available. The receiver will see the providers number not yours.

sometimes when i recieve calls on my uk registered mobile in Thailand, an odd number comes up on the screen and i am not talking about the number 7, i am certain some calls go through a 3rd party to forward them on and that would be then number that shows up, same same with sms.

When an sms message is send, and the recipients phone is either turned off, or out of signal range... these sms messages are returned to an sms message forwarding center. They are usually held for 24 hours (depending on network), during this period they are re-sent (or attempts are made thereat), after which they are deleted.

Seems the number is owned by Jersey Telecom
Take a look at this url for some info:

http://www.ukphoneinfo.com/cgi-bin-Phon ... mit=Submit

Click on the "table of the code allocations...." in blue, it gives prefixes and owners.

So a quick email to Jersey Telecom and i'll let you know their responce

Jersey telecom deny all knowledge of the number even whn shown the above data from the website and an operator list from OFTEL (the UK telecommunications governing body)......Interesting though, as an ex telecommunications consultant this is the sort of problem I like to solve.....
