SanBorn, that seems to be some good info. It certainly makes sense to me. So what you're saying is that a divorced farmer's daughter with a child or a farmer's daughter with an out-of-wedlock child gets zero in both cases?

In simple terms yes, but it's up to you. You do not have to pay dowry for girls you describe but they will try to get it if possible. However you are expected to help out with her family occationally. You just have set limts and control you budget.
Thai girls are afraid of Thai men so they will never try to get over on them without a backup. However, Thais think Farangs are weak pussies. So no problem for them. In time you will see and hear so many sad stories if you stay long enough.

I think you have to bargain your way out of money situations as much as possible, otherwise they will end up with your money, and they think you are weak because you allowed them to get it.

Thais are picking up on the fact that farang now rent as opposed to buying property and purchase cars/pickups through finance companies as opposed to buying them by cash so Thais end up with nothing assetwise in their name.

As there is so much information on numerous sites where the newbie can read a lot of experiences from other expats,I think they are being more prudent in there decisions with new relationships!Therefore they are renting while developing the relationship and learning about living within this culture!

Many relationships between Thai and Farangs don't workout so it's best to keep yourself financially secured. Over paying for dowry and later be rediculed by other farangs and Thais is very embarrasing and painful. So being cautious is a wise move.

i personally am completely against the idea of sin sot, and will never participate. well, of course if anyone plans on marrying Gem in 10 plus yrs, 10 million baht to start, depending on inflation of cours.

My Thai wife was never legally married and never had any children. We lived together for more than a year before we got married. I'm a crotchety old fart, set in my ways and not so easy to live with. She understood that I value my/our privacy and that we would have no family members living with us. She also understood that I was marrying her and NOT her family. We have no problems with her family. I was willing to pay sinsod but left it up to her. She decided that it wasn't necessary. She was 37 years old when we were married and mature enough not to be influenced by any family members. Life is good.

Yes ,there is always the exception to the basic rule ,but if you ask,you will find that MOST will not marry them or pay sinsod and the few that will,get the sinsod back or are marrying her because she has money!

Well, you do whatever you want amongst yourselves. However, IMHO, I believe we should be the ones getting sin sot from Thai families for marrying their daughters and for being the "gems" we are. How else would you know, for instance, which countries Thailand borders with? Ha? I think we are worth the buck!

I tell my Gfs all they will get is just me and a good life, no sin sod, no engagement ring, no wedding ring, but for sure some suffer ring.
