Thinking of Moving to Thailand

PostAuthor: CraigClaire » June 2, 2007, 7:22 pm

A friend of ours back in the Uk is willing to sell his house to us in Udon Thani. And we were wondering if it is possible to open a business in Udon Thani.

We have been to Thailand many times for holidays up to the max visa time of 3 months.

What kind of things have we got to do to be able to get a visa to live in Thailand without having to leave the country every 3 months?

Any information would be great

Many Thanks

Why in the world would you want to open a bar in Thailand, the best information I can give you is don't plan on making a living here, there can always be a little money made but you have to start out with big money and it will be little before you know it.

If you don't have retirement to live think carefully before doing this, it can be done but I doubt that a bar will do it. Of course you can buy or lease a bar here lots of people want out of the mess they are in. Lee found his nitch but he is a very sharp young man. Others have as well but not many in operating bars.

dont burn your bridges is the main thing to remember , at some time you will want to return when you get to know the real score.

I was just thinking that maybe you shold buy the house and rent it for awhile! Then you would get a good idea what doing business is like in Thailand. You would be lucky to get maintenance costs of your home from the rent that it commands.Perfect example of business opportunity in Thailand

Have you thought about the visas you need to operate a business in Thailand?
The only way you find success in Udon Thani is to find a niche in the market. Bars open and close in Udon Thani with the wind direction.

Yes, Visas are getting sorted out as we are going to buy a business. We wont be going down the bar route, sticking to what we know....Hotels

Thanks for your advice xx

Lots of good advice here. I hope that you have been to Udon thani a few times. Best advice I can give is stick with some thing that you know really well. I see many bars owned by people who have no idea what they are doing. I once looked into buying a bar in Thailand and after examining the books versus my observations about the business I dropped the idea quickly. Keep in my that you will have to deal with some Thai and foreigners with less than pure ideals. Its an interesting place to work but keep in mind you could quickly lose your shirt... Best advice I saw was to not burn any bridges...

is the Silver Reef hotel still up for grabs in Udon ? (just a thought).

I've seen the Silver Reef still advertised for sale at 25 Million Baht, on a couple of websites.

Good Luck.
