This is how they treat tourists >>>

A BRITISH man is facing a two-year sentence in a hellish Thai prison for being ‘rude’ to an official.

Voice reader Simon Burrowes, from Wembley, north London, was ending a holiday with a friend when Thai authorities in Phuket airport detained him on January 31, preventing him from returning to the UK.

Immigration officials suspected Burrowes’ passport was a forgery. Speaking to The Voice via phone from Thailand, Burrowes said: “A woman at immigration was looking at my passport and then handed it to the man behind her. I was ushered to sit down whilst he took out a magnifying glass and proceeded to check my passport for half an hour,” he explained.

He was told that he was not getting on the plane and was taken to a detention centre, whilst his friend Matthew was able to fly back to the UK. Burrowes said: “I’m a black man so I’m used to getting hassle at airports, but I was shocked by this.” For three weeks, the 44-year old was held with 126 men in a cramped prison cell.

“Thai prisons are notorious for being some of the worst. There is no privacy. You go to the toilet in the open and there is no toilet paper. There were guys in there that had scabies and were next to me,” said Burrowes.

He contacted the British Consulate, who confirmed his passport was genuine. However, the disgruntled Brit claims that the Consulate should have done more, saying that they took long to react to his case.

“I was disgusted and beside myself. People talk of them [the British Consulate] like they are the cavalry. If you have issues abroad they come charging to help. But they didn’t really help me,” he fumed. Burrowes was later charged with ‘rude and aggressive behaviour’ towards an immigration officer, a claim he denies, and was released on £2,000 bail. He must remain in Thailand until his trial begins on April 26, and his lawyer has warned he could face a two-year jail sentence.

“I have to find some way to sustain myself financially while I am here. I went to Thailand to enjoy the land, learn the culture and spend some money. It’s turned into a nightmare,” he said. Burrowes is hoping that he will soon be able to fly back to the UK.

“If they find me guilty, who knows what will happen. I met people in prison who are doing five years for having two spliffs on them. It’s very difficult to hold yourself up in a Thai prison. I feel very bitter about what has happened,” he said. A spokesman for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London told The Voice they are
looking into the case.

Do British passports use biometrics or have electronic chips embedded in them? I don't understand why it took so long to confirm it was a valid passport.

Maybe because he might of been rude from the start...thus a little lesson was taught, (just a thought of course)

As our man 'Ali G' would say..'Is It Cos i Is Black'......(i very much doubt it, will put it down to being very rude)

yes they have all the anti forgery measures and as they see them every day they should know how to check without causing this guy grief . i would go **** as well if i was in his shoes .it would have had the Thailand visa entry stamp as well so no reason for a shakedown and jail .

The newer ones do, yes.

If this tale is true it's just another one to add to all the others about the 'little Hitlers' who work in immigration departments around the world. The job certainly seems to attract more than its fair share of lowlifes.

At the risk of stating the obvious, whilst we don't know how this chap behaved, and it might have been badly, the publicity involved is not going to help Thailand's tourist industry.

True Marmite, this is more a reflection on Immigration staff world wide than about Thailand.
Try getting "****" with immigration in ANY country (including USA & UK) and see what it gets you - certainly not preferential treatment!!!
Some people do have a chip on their shoulders (maybe with good cause from past experiences) and tend to react offensively when problems occur. In my experience this can only ever worsen what will happen!!!!

agree, but since not charged with assaulting anyone, simply yelling and ranting, though if i missed my flight because immigrations couldn't decide within half hour if my passport was real or not, or simply ringing the embassy to verify, then i'd be pissed also, especially after 3 weeks in jail, possible not even knowing what i was charged with till in front of judge. now need to fend for myself till end of april, with possibility of 2 yrs, simply for verbally expressing myself. yea, i'll be back to visit and tell all my friends.

to top it off, i'm sure the job is waiting for him at home. hope he was invaluable at work.

i'd be trying to sneak out a.s.a.p. :-$ :-$ :-$ :-$

This is yet another advert ....Dont come to Thailand!
What ever this man said (probably went apsh1t and swore and cursed at them), There was no reason to detain him.Best let him miss flight was enough!
This was obviously a revenge tactic with those poor Thai babies  Bet he had them in tears!

I read one or two posts about this on Thai Visa....
Apparently Immigration queried his passport photo as it looked as though he was "topless".How he could have got a passport if this was the case,I dont know.....he's a coloured guy so if he was wearing a black top maybe ?
Apparently he snatched his passport back, used some expletives and was rude about Thailand.
Mr.Burrowes is well versed in martial arts and came to Thailand for the "Thai Boxing" so can handle himself,no problem.
I doubt if we will ever find out the true story.....possibly some Immigration Official "losing face" and seeking revenge.
But facing two years for this is ridiculous. If he did behave badly why not just deport him ?
You cant go crazy with Immigration,no matter what the provocation.
I keep telling myself this each time before I visit Nong Khai.....up to now "no ploplem."

I would say I am a pretty quick tempered person - but even i know don't start abusing officials in Thailand, especially in public , Thai person in uniform losing face in public? [-X , I notice the inevitable race card came in, it wouldn't have mattered a toss what colour you are , how about the thousands of farangs getting the odd dodgy speeding tickets?, whether your'e in the wright or wrong - your not in the UK now ,where the authorities are told to have a sympathetic ear when being verbally abused.

Yes, point taken KE.

Example of a Policeman or other official in the UK: -

"Well, I'm sorry you feel that way sir".......

....... "I'm also sorry you feel it necessary to question my parentage sir, and indeed the legitimacy of my mother's birth"........

........"Anyway sir, here's your ticket........ Oh, and another ticket for the sweet wrapper you inadvertently dropped, whilst you were so admirably demonstrating your wide vocabulary......... You can be on your way now, sir, and drive safely......
Have a nice day!"
