For some strange reason, and I'm not complaining, I have just logged onto my TOT ADSL and where I am paying for a 512/256 connection I'm now showing a speed of 1.5Mbps......... it used to say speed 524k or something similar.......

Anyone else been bumped up????

A short time ago (maybe beginning of October, not sure), TOT automatically doubled the speed for current subscribers eg I am on Goldcyber, or 1024, and I got bumped up to 2048 (in theory at least).

No-one is sure whether it is a permanent upgrade, or just a promotion from TOT.

OK thanx for the reply, I had a look at the TOT website and couldn't see any mention of a promotion, Hey Ho make hay while the sun shines as they say...

It's great for downloading movies thats for sure....

I am not sure you will be able to read above messsage but I have coppied from TOT website. It is a gift from TOT.
Actually, it is TOT 's maketing plan to get more new customers by launching campaign 1Mb ADSL with 590 THB monthly. What about old customers that pay near by that rate.? off course , they will be automatically upgrated to this campaign.

Yes, all old customers got a (thai) letter where the free upgrade was explained. The point is that I did not notice ANY difference between my former 350 and now 1500 speed (according to the Maxnet web speed test). The simple reason is that everything that I (you) try to access is hosted on servers outside of Thailand.

Maybe I should add that I travel regularly between Germany and Thailand, so I work on both sides all the time. I am astonished to see that even the Bangkok Post page is faster loading from Germany than from within Thailand. I have not ONE adress in my browser related to Thailand that does NOT load much quicker from Germany.

IMHO this is fully intentionally. The effect is known for many years and has not changed. I suspect the government to filter and control the data stream. With too high bandwidth they would not be able to control the flood...

joey, TOT ADSL is pretty good, there have been some outages of late, last week connection was up and down a lot but for the most it's stable. I download a lot of movies and now regularly get 130-150k bps.

I've also been told we are on the edge of the distance limit from the telephone exchange to receive ADSL, we have a lot of overhead telephone cable to the house. Seems this plays a part in the speed you achieve.

I do agree with Techland above though, when I have family / friends visit they all tell me local Thai sites load faster in Europe than here.

My 1 Mbps connection was bumped up to 2 Mbps too but ever since then service has be pretty bad. Around 6 AM I can get the full 200 KBps if I download stuff but by 7 AM the speed begins to fall off and I have to use a download accelerator with multiple streams to get that. By 3 or 4 PM the best I can do even with 10 streams is 100 to 150 KBps and a speed test to speedtest.net only gives me 10 to 15 KBps for out of Thailand connections. In Thailand the download speed is still good. By 8 PM my download speed with 10 connections is 70 or 80 KBps and a single connection is around 5 to 8 KBps. Barely better than dialup. And I also get 1 to 2 minute breaks where I'm still connected to TOT's servers but nothing comes through. I've figured they had some problems getting the new system set up correctly so I haven't called them but it sounds like y'all don't have the same symptoms so I guess I'll call them today. They may just have me connected in with too many other people.

On the Thai sites loading faster out of Thailand - I wouldn't be real surprised but what a lot of the sites are hosted outside of Thailand even though they've got a .co.th domain. Which is not to say that I disagree with the idea that the whole system is slower because the government filters what goes over the net.

I also have TOT ADSL and live in First Home Village. My download speed is rarely better than 5-10 KBS with an occasional run up to 25 KBS. I wish I were as lucky as some of you and received a speed up-grade for free. As a matter of fact, I have changed from the "high speed" ADSL all the way down to the slowest, in order to save a few Baht. Guess what??? My speed is still the same At 5-10 KBS. TOT has a problem in this area that they have never corrected in my 3 years of dealing with them. This past August, they did run a different phone line and gave me a different phone number. This had no effect whatsoever with my speed, but at least now, I manage to stay on line a lot more than I had been able to in the past.

fremmel, what you say is correct, according to a friend who is a PC guru, speed is also dependant upon the number of subscribers connected to the same hub and using the service at the same time. Well I think thats what he said, a lot of what he tells me slides straight over the bald spot..... but it seems to ring true for me, Saturday and Sunday are usually not so good during the day, guess all the kids are MSN'ing, Myspacing etc etc

Knowing how much TOT cares about customer satisfaction, I guess off in the future when we're still using the facilities they now have available, I'll be able to click on a letter from Mom just before I go to bed, and wake up the next day just in time to read it. I've heard this line before, "If you build it, they will come". Well TOT needs to know we have come, so perhaps they should build it, a decent hub that is.

It may be that there is an additional problem, but it seems you missed the information above confirmed by fremmel. The main problem is that as soon as Thais begin to work, the speed goes down and down and down - but only for outside connections (which usually is what you use). Try the speed test on thai servers and you will see full speed at any time. Then it is clear that you don't have a problem of too many people using your part of the connection, but the ssme problem whole Thailand is moaning about for years.

Why not try gprs my wife uses it in udon at around 400 bht a month depending on your usage.

Check this out... I was having trouble getting on line. I'd called TOT and was told they were having a problem but I should have service by 3 PM. So my sister-in-law brought her laptop over to my house because she has a WIFI connection and was operating just fine. Well, I used her computer for a while and asked her where she was getting the signal from. She said she didnt' know, just plugged in the little Benq WIFI thingy and there it was. I then looked up at my modem and all the lights were flashing like normal (I have a wireless modem transmitter but had it connected directly (hard-wired) to my own computer. I turned off my modem and sure enough, we lost the signal on her laptop.

Seems my wireless has been transmitting throughout the neighborhood since I hooked it up and I hadn't put any security stops on it so she's been receiving free internet all along. Well, I unhooked my hard-line from the modem and turned on my 'air-port' and sure enough my internet service came right up.

So, anyone who wants free internet service, just come park yourself in front of my house and have a go. I've no plans of installing any security on it, so my sister-in-law will continue to have her fun.
