PostAuthor: rickfarang » March 11, 2008, 7:07 pm

Is anybody else seeing TOT ADSL stop working on an almost daily basis this month?

Is Cat an Internet provider here in Udon? What choice are there for internet services? I have had TOT for a while and now have TT&T. Not all that pleased with TT&T at the present time. Has TOT improved in last year or so?

I have been using 2048/512 Indy package for 1000 baht/month.

Rick,

Yes, I have been eperiencing problems with TOT, since November.

Every time I attempt to log on, I get authentifacation Failed, I then have to go to speed touch, and re authentificate, when I have done this invariably, I find that I have no DSL connection, usually, if I then wait about 20 to 30 minutes, I eventually get online, but if I'm lucky, it will last 15 minutes or so before DSL drops out again.

TOT have informed me its because I live more than 5 kms from the booster point!!!,

But it gets bloody frustrating

PS, I don't know what number you ring, but this number is direct to the control room. (only during office hours)042 248 236

Yeah, I dial the same number. Sometimes they answer, but its rare that it does me any good to call. One of my neighbors came over and told me that his ADSL is out today too.

Mainer, I would have to say that TOT's ADSL has not improved for me in the last year. They are currently worse if anything. And there were just here last week, making a lot of noise, trying to book new customers.

Yeah, my TOT ADSL service really declined after they "upgraded" me to 2Mbs in November. Early mornings are fine but speed decreases as the day goes by until I get an average download speed or 5 or 6 KBs in the evenings with very slow page loads. The last week or so it's gotten even worse with numerous disconnects of 30 secs to 30 minutes during the day. But who are you going to change to? Hurray for monopolies.

I just got off the phone with TOT in Udon. She said they are having network problems. "You can wait a few days?" :(

I am thankful that some people on this forum told me how to set up my AIS account to use GRPS for a pretty good price. At least I am not "grounded" while TOT tries to get their service running again.

Fremmel, that (slow down in spite of high "bandwidth" capability) is what I was afraid of.

My (limited) understanding is that the problems related to "speed" may not be down to TOT.

Thailand has very limited bandwidth to the outside world, and this is controlled by CAT, from whom TOT purchases bandwidth.

I am on a Goldcyber (2Mbs) package, reasonably close to the local exchange in Ban Dung.

I have done download speed tests ( http://www.speedtest.net/ ) at 07.45 this morning, (and again just now 11.00 - result in (brackets)), and achieved 1763 (1678) kb/s to Bangkok - quite reasonable, and within TOT's control.

When you start going international however (beyond TOT's control), the results are OK in the morning, and then horrible (again, later test in (brackets)) - Sydney 876 (54) kb/s, Singapore 1716 ( 91), Tokyo 1647 (86), London 1718 (135), LA 1678 (96), New York 1639 (160).

I am happy to be corrected if my understanding is not correct.

As to other problems with TOT, I have generally found them to be OK, and fixed (infrequent) problems within a reasonable time.

(Its been 2 hours and TOT is back up, after being down for 22 hours. I wonder if when the lady at TOT said "A few days", she meant to say "A few hours???)

Apparently, CAT still operates the only international gateway. This is very handy in instances in which the government needs to control information flow. And yep, when the kids are home from school, playing music and having their video chats over the internet, things bog down quite a bit. I understand that the service providers have been asking for their own international gateways for years, but I don't have hope of this happening anytime soon.

Same basic results I got jackspratt when I did the tests. I agree that part of the problem is most likely CAT because they're selling more bandwidth than they actually have. It's possible, but less likely, that TOT may have a problem with their links to CAT's international gateway when they get high traffic loads. The evening slowdown is probably beyond their control. It did get much worse when TOT switched me to 2Mbs but maybe that's because everyone started using it more. But when I check my connection and can't even get to the local gateway, or worse yet, get a "No DSL connection" then that's TOT.

I've been with TOT ADSL for a couple of years, both here in Udon and down in Rayong and have had mixed experiences. Generally I've been satisfied with them since I don't really expect western style connectivity. But the last few months have not been good. I have to think they're just selling more than they can deliver.

It's been out everyone morning several weeks until around 0930. In the evenings very slow. Several times it has been siggseted to me to buy the more expensive package in talking with the guys who have dione that the service doesn't seem to be any better so I have not done that.

So far most of the time I haev had good luck with the trouble numberm usually takes a few calls which I do hourly. Then all of a sudden I get aces. Drives the wife crazy since she has to make the calls.

Th only two alternatives I know of are satelite systems very expensive. The other is LOXINFO buying the cards using standard dial up. Charged by the minute and much slower then ADSL.

I will ask this again. Is Cat an Internet provider here in Udon? Can we buy internet services from them?

Thanks Rick for your info.

I don't think you can buy landline service directly from CAT but they have a wireless service like GPRS that is based on a CDMA. Since it's a different signal from most cell phones you need a different handset. I've also seen units that look like a regular house phone and they probably also have a card that fits into one of the slots on your laptop. I haven't had any experience with CAT up here but I've used Hutch CDMA down in Rayong. With the Hutch version CDMA works OK but not wonderful. It was more reliable and 2 or 3 times faster than dialup but not as fast as even the slowest ADSL. I'm not sure what packages are available up here but the one I had 2 years ago was about 1,000/month unlimited usage. I should know a lot more next week because I'm about to move to an area with no landlines so I'm going to have to go back to that.

For your information, I have had TOT as an internet "provider" for three years now. During this time I have been conned into believing that paying a little extra will give you more download speed. So, believing their con game, I have tried every speed and price packages they offer. Download speed is horrible (5-10KB/sec) no matter what package I use. They are over selling what they cannot properly support. Very good marketing I must say, but a big con. I also have frequent outages of up to 3 days. I have also had 3 different phone lines and phone numbers over the 3 years that would "fix the problem". Never happened. As I type, I am just coming out of another mulit-day outage. Thank God I'm not dependent on TOT ADSL to operate an on-line business. I'd be headed in the same direction the USA is headed right now. In summary, I suggest you save your money and buy their cheapest package, because they can't deliver the goods, at least, not here in First Home Village in Udonthani

OK guys, I'm living inside the ring-road and just did a speed test... upload 59.8Kbps & download 382Kbps. Time 8:25 PM. I'm using TOT ADSL with a wireless router (Net Gear, not theirs).

Fremmel has the straight scoop on CAT. When I went their they had cellphones and desk phones plus a variety of laptop cards available. I would have gotten their 'best' unit but found it would not be compatible with my Macintosh - thus my 2M TOT service. Speeds vary just as stated above and my best speed is early morning (6 to 9 AM).

At least I have service so I hesitate to complain (I have NOT experienced the outages indicated above). My question is, with HOME Cable going to nearly every home in Udon with a TV, why do they not provide an internet cable service?? Seems like it would be a lucrative business decision to me. People who didn't have HOME Cable would get it just for the internet service and those who already have it would gladly sign-on for internet service as well. A no brainer to me. 8)
