TOT blocking outgoing email

PostAuthor: rickfarang » January 31, 2008, 9:42 am

I had been banging my head against the wall, trying to figure out why I can't sent email from my computer. Each time I tried to send email, I got an error message: "An operation on the server timed out..."

This does not affect web browser based email like Hotmail, Yahoo, Netscape, Gmail, etc., only POP email which is the most common way for email clients like Entourage, Thunderbird, Eudora, Pegasus, and Outlook.

It turns out that to reduce spam, TOT is now blocking port 25, which is the default port for sending email (SMTP).

I Googled "TOT port 25" and found that some people were able to send thier email by using port 587, 465 (SMTPS), or port 2525 (SMTPS).

Others had success using TOT's SMTP servers: smtp.totisp.net and smtp-adsl.totonline.net

It was reported that smtp.totisp.net sometimes receives email but does not forward it because TOT is having problems with its servers.

Proceed with caution. Good luck to all TOT customers. ](*,)

It was nice of TOT to warn us that they were going to do this.

I found that I can send SMTP via my POP-enabled gmail account this may be the safest alternative for those who have it available.

I've had the same problem with gmail and now use port 465 all is OK. I have a company (work) email server that uses port 25 but doesn't work through TOT but we have webmail for travelling so I get away with using this method

Thanks for the info. So far I thought that if you want to use port 465 then you are automatically using secured SMTP, which means encrypted transmission. And this is in most cases not available from your provider. If it is, then it must be asked for and set up, and a password must be set up as well.

Seems I was right. Just changing the port prevents the connection for mail sending.

Veeerrrry interesting, Rick. Seems I have a similar problem.. only different. When trying to use my favorite email program, Thunderbird, I can send email just fine. I just cannot receive email. I have to use my gmail on-line email program because my TOT connection always times out when I try to receive email via Thunderbird and gives me the 'server pop.gmail.com timed out' notice.

Of course, recent attempts to contact TOT via telephone are in vain due to busy lines. 8)

Latest rumour: tonight the capacity for 'outside' data to come in to Thailand (or be spread within Thailand) will be raised significantly. Maybe all these problems are gone tomorrow...for some time...

Techland - I just checked my Gmail settings on my Thunderbird Email program and I have the following

Description: Gmail
Server Name: smtp.gmail.com
Port: 465
User Name: My email address
Secure Connection: SSL

So yes I am using a secure connection but no I didn't make any special set up merely signed up for a Gmail account and read how to use it on Thunderbird.

Nice if this works with Gmail - I don't use it myself. And I doubt that using encrypted transmission within the octopus 'Google' makes any sense...but that is a different topic...

Speed tests to Kansas and Kentucky in the U.S. today were not impressive. But I am optimistic that this will improve... :D
