TOT Promotion for Upgraded Speeds

PostAuthor: jackspratt » March 28, 2009, 9:09 am

On Thai Visa there is a thread relating to a promotion by TOT whereby you can upgrade to much higher ADSL speeds ie 3mB for TBH690/month (including free domestic calls), and 4mB for 890/month.

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/Tot-s-4mb ... 52246.html

It apparently requires a 1 year contract (not a problem where I am, as TOT is the only choice).

Has anyone in or around Udon heard of this, or actually upgraded? I was thinking of going into TOT when I am in Udon on Monday to get more information.

ps this thread is not about TOT levels of service :-#

I am with TOT on ASDL in Udon Jack - 1 years contract (3 months to go).
690 a month (2MB, no free phone calls :( ).
They haven't sent anything with their monthly bill to me, but maybe because I have 3 months to go (no, I don't believe they are that efficient :D ).
Next bill due on 15th. - so I guess I will get about 8/9th.- will have a close look for at any flyers then.

Bob on the link I posted above, people were saying that TOT was not advising current customers of the promotion - WTF!

No doubt they are trying to attract new customers, without upsetting the cosy structure they have with current customers.

I also have a 2mB plan for TBH1000/month - no contract, and no free calls. As you can imagine, to upgrade to 4mB and free calls for TBH110 less per month (or even 3mB for 310 less) is quite attractive to me.

-Beaware boys and girls, men and women....My thoughts about Tot:

*Absolute no service what so ever.
*The 3 MB deal is ONLY for Domesic surfing,ie if you like me surf the Internationell waves...this is NOT for you.You should go for the Premiere packet.A littlebit moore expensive BUT works ok.2Mb down and 1 Mb up for 1090Bath/month.

*ToT=No good,atleast that's my experience.....My two cent....Mr.Saengkaew alias Alfie ;) :D

I think that they have been reading up on the actions of Sky TV & BT internet who regularly used to do the same thing in the UK. Sky was an issue with me as I had zero alternative, BT saw the last of me as a customer as soon as my contract expired!! :D :D Choice is a great leveller in the never ending battle between customer & company.. :D :D
Be interested what they say to you at the office on Monday Jack.....

I have the TOT 3MB package and was aware that the International downloads were slower. So recently went in and asked what the actual difference in speeds were between the various packages, particularly the next one up and down. I was trying to establish if there was a point at which the International downloads became markedly faster.

The staff didn't seem to know and couldn't give me a coherent answer, instead opting to try and demonstrate on their PC. However, nothing too much seemed to be happening, apart from little lines very slowly progressing around a computer generated globe of the world on their website/computer. That seemed to peter out, so they called an Engineer who also spent some time trying this and that and eventually gave up, as did I and went home (and had another cup of tea!! )!!

So I am still none the wiser. :? :?

Went into TOT yesterday to enquire about the upgrade.

Signed up for 4mB/s at TBH1000/month - same price as I am currently paying for 2mB, and the same price as I was paying for 1mB when I set the account up in early 2007.

No free calls, and must take out a 12 month contract. Also got a freebie router, which I will use as a back-up if my current wireless router goes kaput. I also asked about the distinction between national and international downloads, as flagged above by arjay. They said there was no difference, and logically (though not necessarily technologically) thinking, I can't see how they could differentiate between the two.

Was told that if I was in Udon the same package would cost TBH890 (as advertised), but as I was in the sticks, the price was 1000 - I am not complaining.

Of course the big test will be on Thursday, when they switch me over to 4mB.

Interestingly, as I was doing all this, another farang came in to the TOT office, and asked to downgrade his plan. Said he was currently paying for 1mB, but could never get this speed in village, so wanted to go back to 256kBs. Looking at a piece of paper given to me by TOT, it seems under the promotion, he could get 2mB for the same price as he will be paying for 256kB (even if the higher speed is achievable only on the odd occasion). Maybe he will read this post.

Bob I think the free router may be standard with all TOT ADSL packages (but not certain).

It is a very basic single port static router. http://www.speedguide.net/broadband-view.php?hw=32

Gulfman, yes, you're right .... it was from.... "charlie and me had another cup of tea and then we went home". It was something that just came into my head at the time.... :? :D :D

I'm sure it was TOT who told me, as well as input on this forum, that International downloads/traffic are slower.

On 1 mb/s service on TOT, I have checked connection speeds (mainly downloads) both within Thailand and internationally, mainly to U.S. servers. By far, the domestic connections are much faster. I was told a while back that this is because of the bottleneck which is the government controlled gateway. Makes sense.

Tested the speeds after the switchover last night. Just over 3mBs to Bangkok. For international, varying results, but 3+ to Singapore, 2.8 to LA, 3+ to Seoul, etc .

I wouldn't expect to maintain those speeds during the day when the pressure on Thailand's feeble bandwidth will increase, but I am happy thusfar. \:D/
