'Trance' thefts

PostAuthor: Brian Davis » May 9, 2009, 8:07 am

It won’t come as too much of a surprise, but a word of warning that gangs of thieves appear to be operating where there are crowds.

Up my way (Phen) the monthly big market saw the bottom of handbags being slashed open, one lady targeted who had just come from the bank. Also, yesterday at the Ban That festival, where even a monk’s bag was stolen. I don’t think that counts as ‘making merit‘. #-o

But there’s something I hadn’t previously heard of. I’m the first to be sceptical about some of the local happenings I’m told of, but this comes from my wife and her friends. There appears to be someone operating with the ability to put people into a trancelike state by touch and saying a few words. The victims, recover after a short while to find their gold chains, in particular, or other property missing.

Very strange. Other than a person with some sort of ‘power’, I was wondering if there was some kind of device/substance which could do this. It seems the victims are not shocked as per electric, but possibly some sort of liquid put on the skin.

n.b. I’m NOT writing this from hospital.

My wife has been telling me the same story since I met her, she claims her friend was robbed by someone who stopped her coming out of the bank touched her hand and asked for directions, the next my wifes friend knew she was waking up in her car on the opposite side of town, handbag, jewellry and everything from the car missing, luckily she'd just made a deposit in the bank rather than withdrawal so they didn't get much in cash but did get a few baht in gold. The wife says this has been happening all over Thailand for many years. The wifes Sister says these people are ghosts, "dead people monsters" as she calls them, my reply, why do they want money and jewellry if they're dead?

My wife still won't go to Phuket to see our neice, because she believes there are "Dead People Monsters" walking around after the big wave hit the island.

Thanks for the humour - um, I think. Funnily enough, it WAS very hot at Ban That!

As I implied, I probably annoy the locals by chuckling away at some of the bull**** I hear and, of course, I've been told so much about ghosts. It is difficult, at times, to take the Thai too seriously when so many of their beliefs are based on superstition and fear. As a letter in the Bangkok Post suggested, it would be interesting to know how many victims of road accidents, natural disasters etc. had amulets or lucky charms to protect them from their fate! But the Buddah on the dashboard or monk's writing on the roof will protect you from EVERYTHING. Yeah. I'm sure the Thai would then argue that the charm meant they died peacefully, or the injuries would have been so much worse.

But, excluding the 'dead people monster' theory, there do appear to be some people operating able to use hypnotics or whatever to their advantage. Chris's post is very similar to situations I've heard of. Wish I had the 'skill'. Think of the fun I could have had in those girlie bars. :-" Now, look into my eyes ........

Ever consider that it's merely an excuse used by the unscrouplous to explain away a missing gold chain or wad of cash?

HI honey, I'm home! I was robbed today by a person I never met and who didn't hurt me and I can't remember what he looked like. He took everything I had including my watch and gold and bankbook and pin numbers.

Dinner will be ready at 6.

When they blessed our car at the wat, we got a nice paper with it stating this blessing was only valid up to a speed of 120 km/h! Even Buddah can not protect you above that speed ;-).

Same situation here, we have some fields here nearby and none of the Thai go near the place at night as somebody has heard that there used to be a lake over there, and then there MIGHT have been people drowning, so now everybody is convinced there are ghosts over there. I asked my wife why she is not afraid to drive on the highway at night, given the Thai driving skills those highways must be swarming with ghosts! But logic has got nothing to do with this it seems ;-).

superstitious mumbo jumbo for sure but ,
there are some strange things happen in LOS --old men with horrible appearance suddenly become 'hansum men' so what to make of it ?

but seriously i was waylaid by a white turbaned swami some years ago who put the whammy on me ,it was weird like he had his hand inside my skull .
i asked a normal black turban gent back in the UK about the white turban gents and he said they have super powers and dont mess with them !

who knows whats going on in LOS ,i reserve judgment in this matter ,do a search on Thaivisa it was discussed some years go
