Udon Thani Bar changes?

PostAuthor: brewsterbudgen » October 29, 2008, 11:05 pm

Last year I was in Udon and mainly drank at the bars in Farang Alley, opposite Robinsons. Am I now right in thinking that these bars no longer exist? If so, where are the best places to drink and find some company? I hope to be staying at the Irish Clock (have made an online reservation) and know the bars in that street.

Cheers

In answer to your questions:

Yes the old farang alley opposite Robinson complex is long gone (currently there are open air market stalls springing into life there).

Irish Clock is still there in the soi you mention, along with Top Mansion etc. But that's also the soi where the new soi farang is - we call it "the cowshed" as it's basically a big shed full of heifers. Some of them are girls too !

Actually it's a lot nicer than the old soi falang. It's called Night and Day (or Day and Night - can't remember!) on the same side as, and inbetween Top Mansion and Irish Clock. There are some new bars nearly opposite Irish Clock too.

There is a new area called Nutty Park - go down the the above soi with Irish Clock on your right, get to the end, turn left, then about 40 or 50 meters it's on your left. New bars etc in there. If you go past Nutty Park you see the new Mr.Tongs on your left.

Good grief, there's also the new night market area - still got the old one, but new area opening up more or less opposite Koala Bar. Near there will also be a new chopping centre I believe - something to rival Robinsons.

Molly Malones (ex-Downunder bar) has now gone and it being turned into something else and a few other buildings have been knocked down around the place.

Pla and Geromes Bar has been sold (in the same soi as Irish Clock - Soi Sampan I think it's called) and I think is owned by a Norweigan bloke now. Shame, I was practising my French there for a while!

We finally have decent pizzas here - A bloke called Daniel has the best pizza's available in Udon - can't remember the name of his place (I think Pizza Taya), but to get there - go down soi sampan with Irish Clock on your left. Get to the end, turn right and it's about the 3rd bar/business on the right. You can phone and order pick up or they will deliver to the local surrounds as well. Quite often we'll sit in Day and Night and ring to order and about 20 mins later it's there - just cooked.

Gee, I suppose it has changed a bit over the last 12 months or so!!

Anyway, that's what I think the state of play is - if I have something wrong then any of the guys please correct the information.

Cheers
Phil

you can also scratch nong's ribs off the list at the present time, as i drove by the other day, and premises are vacant of fixtures. if don't know, not in area you will be staying, but was a good feed at times, and nice hosts, past/present and now past again. UP2U from soi farang has moved over to nutty park if that was a favorite of yours, easy to find, on corner unit on the way to 7-11, just before MC BBQ, and 50/50 is at DN, Day & Night mentioned above. also Green Leif is around the corner, right turn at 7-11 heading toward train station, nice comfy mid priced place, good stuff w/lunch buffet (89).

ok, catching up............enjoy. 8)

That confused me - but I want to know! Do you really mean 'up', in direction of Top Mansion? Then turn right in direction of Paolo? Thanks.

Nong's Ribs closed?? Gee, I haven't been out much lately but does anyone know why and when Nong's closed? I liked the ribs there and the owner seemed like a pleasant guy.

I just drove past Seaside 3, next to Lotus and it looks like they have closed up shop.

I also notice John's bar (behind Bar Code) has been repainted and the signs taken down.

What the He!! is going on? I don't go out for a couple of weeks and when I venture out I see places closing up....and this is high season ??

I am a little shocked to see this happening even if a little belt tightening is going on.

Anyone have a little insight to this?

Re Pizza Place

PostAuthor: Philrjones » November 2, 2008, 8:28 am

In reply to where the Daniel's pizza place is - yes you are right Techland.

Go along Soi Sampan as if Irish Clock, Day and Night and Top Mansion are on your left. When you get to the main road at the end turn right as if going to Paolo hospital. The place is then on the right hand side of the road about 3 shops down. I think there is a corner bar first, then another small bar, then the pizza place - has a couple of wooden tables out front. Proper pizza oven and Daniel makes them well.

You can order on the phone then pick up which I've done a few times - Daniel's phone is 0831410116 - or he will deiver locally. I keep telling him he should advertise on Udonmap!

Hope that helps.

Cheers

Stayed at Tops Mansion last night, so on the walk round to night market decided to pop head into D&N. I kid you not, at 6.30pm, other than a few disconsolate bar owners, not a single farang in sight. I counted five bars that hadn't even opened the shutters, don't know if that was a temporary thing or permanent.
In the night market, both old and new one, many farangs of the family ilk were walking about towing wife and kids behind. On the walk back at 11.30 pm, many bars were still empty on the soi and in D&N a couple of places had a half a dozen or so punters but the rest were dead, not even girlies. Maybe they were already offed or just called it a day. :-s Shame really, as now these establishments have been removed from the town centre, it would be nice to see a more vibrant atmosphere prevail.
