UEFA Champions League 2008-09

PostAuthor: Zidane » August 14, 2008, 8:37 am

Two of the English teams in action last night in the Champions League qualifiers.

FC Twente Enschede 0 Arsenal 2
Standard Liege 0 Liverpool 0

So,two pretty good results for our teams although, according to reports, neither were at their best.....early days yet.
Both sides should comfortably progress to the Group Stages where the big teams like Manchester United and Chelsea enter :D

Both Arsenal and Liverpool progressed to the Group Stages of the Champions League last night.
The draw for the Group Stages takes place at 11pm Thai time tonight.

Arsenal had a comfortable 4-0 win over FC Twente Enschede to give them a 6-0 aggregate win but Liverpool had to rely on Dirk Kuyts winner two minutes from the end of injury time to see off Standard Liege 1-0 on aggregate.

Yeah Chelsea should progress to knock out pretty easily.
United have tricky games with Celtic (again) but should go through.
Liverpool & Arsenal really don't have an easy game. Both will need to play well all the way through the leagues.

Yes,agree with your assessment there,Bob.
United didnt make such a good start in Europe last night losing in the UEFA Super Cup 2-1 to Zenit St.Petersburg who,by all accounts, deserved there win.
But an excellent bit of news for United is that a fee has been agreed with Everton for the transfer of Louis Saha. :D Lets hope he doesnt injure himself getting out of bed this morning and the deal is called off !
What a shame 747man is unable to post from the UK.Bet their has been a bit of choice language flying about after he heard this news !
Maybe his capable understudy,Gozzo, would like to comment on behalf of the Everton fans on the forum......two words will suffice!

Zidane, we live in hope..... :D :D
I didn't see last nights game, Scholes got himself sent off.. :( & so will not play against Villarreal.
Although, as you say, St. Petersberg deserved to win.
Just my luck, I have had Vidic captain of my FF & he goes & scores last night ](*,)

Zidane, those two words, would they be fu%&ing hell. But seriously folks, I am in shock at the moment, given the pathetic but predictable start to the season by the mighty toffees.

The way I see it is Saha is being paid when he plays. This could mean a remarkable turnaround in the amount of injuries he sustains. No play, no pay! Only time will tell. I believe he has talent, so if he can stay fit and show some of his skills he might play some part in helping Everton in their climb back up off the floor.

It's only early days so wait and see. Cahill will be fit soon, then we will see some class. \:D/

Well done Liverpool and Chelsea last night =D>
Thought some of you who are not allowed up late might enjoy this.
Wonder goal is a much used term these days but Gerrards last night was indeed that. It's not so clear as viewing it on a big tv but the thing to watch for is the position of the ball at his feet when he strikes it. He allows the ball to pass across him and when just about level with his left foot he cracks it in with his right, truly remarkable.
I have just been messing about trying to figure it out and think I now require back surgery

Last night,3 draws.........

Celtic 0 Aalborg 0
Dinamo Kiev 1 Arsenal 1
Man Utd 0 Villareal 0

Arsenals the best result. At least the other two didnt lose !
Man Utd still lacking that cutting edge in front of goal. The big plus was the return of Christiano Ronaldo who came on for the last 25 minutes.

Surprised and disappointed with the Utd result.
With all their flair players I reckon they are good for at least 1 goal against any opposition. That includes Chelsea at the weekend.

Not surprised with the United result, but disappointed :(
Maybe the season will start for us now Ronaldo is back, but sad if we are going to rely on one player again this season.
At least the other game in our group was a draw as well - so that league starts with the next game... :D

Comfortable wins for United and Arsenal last night 3-0 and 4-0 respectively.
Berbatov got his first goals for United plus one from Rooney.Downside was Scholes stretchered off and Rooney also injured !
Celtic lost 1-0 at Villareal in the same group as United.
