Unsecure Wireless network

PostAuthor: Galee » March 31, 2009, 10:54 am

I have a D Link wireless modem that is unsecure. It's in a spare bedroom so I haven't paid much attention to it, until recently. I've noticed that when I've gone in there the LEDS on the front of the modem are going berserk, even though my laptop is turned off. I suspect a neighbour is hi-jacking my signal.
I've right clicked, left clicked, opened tabs and done everything I can think of, but cannot find any info on how to make my wireless signal secure.
Any suggestions please?

Try this link Galee.

password-protecting-wireless-network-help-needed-t9618.html

I followed the pretty detailed instructions given by Lee & it worked no problem...

Only thing was I should have had a "thumb drive" (or blank CD) on me when I did, as then you can save files from the set up to it & load back up to another (maybe new) PC if you need to give it wireless access in the future....I got around that by saving the file to my hard drive, then mailing it to myself later. If you don't and it is only one 1 PC & the hard drive fails then you are in danger of, effectively, locking yourself out of your own wireless connection

It's easy to set up a secure signal.

What model modem do you have?

I have an unsecured wireless transmitting 24/7. My sis-in-law lives about 60 mtrs away and using my connection regularly. I don't understand the problem? The signal from my modem is being transmitted, omni-directionally, into the air and I pick it up on my PC. What difference does it make that someone else might be using MY signal? It doesn't detract from my signal strength. No harm, no foul. LA, you're welcome to come park in front of my house and us the internet anytime you wish. :guitar: If you feel a bit guilty, bring me beer. :guiness:

No, but it narrows your bandwidth.

Bob,

Thanks for the link. I'll give it a go when I have a disk.

Pakawala, I take it you don't mind other people using what you have paid for. Next time we meet at golf I'm sure you wont mind if I drink your beer. :D

type 192.168.2.1 into your browser you should get the software that runs your browser there. the user will be admin and password none, admin or password. thats assuming the person using your network hasnt already passworded you connection!! Which Pak is the reason for securing it.

galee, you need to make it a wpa psk type encryption, those are hard to crack, I can easily crack someones wifi if its WEP in about 15 minutes to 30 minutes.

If you had a directional antenna and had a copy of backtrack, you can pin point who and where the piggybacker is.
I saw my neighbor (we shared wifi, I paid 1/2) online one time, but I knew his laptop was busted, so I called him and told him he was online.

well another neighbor (he does not look too bright) was spoofing his MAC address, computer name and had cracked the WEP key code. So even if someone does not look too bright, they may be an ace at spoofing, you never know.
I pin pointed him as a neighbor next door.

I think its http://192.168.0.1

your computer needs to be 192.168.0.2

Galee - Even if no disc I'd get it secured as soon as possible and lose the freeloaders. Your settings page will no doubt be different than below but maybe similar. There is a radio dial button to select type of encryption and a button to generate. I used a very hi-tech device to save that key. I scribbled it down on a bit of paper. You could always save your network key in a Word file and save it to that D or E partition for saving stuff to. Alternatively do as Bob and I do (glad I'm not alone on that one) and email it to yourself. Although I haven't lost my bit of paper in 3 years, a more post-Shakespeare method of saving is recommended.

the d-link disc does not do anything, it meerly gives you info on how to set up the router.
in the network connections on your PC, click properties on the icon,
click tcp ip,
properties,
use the following address,
type in the address given by the disc, I believe it was 192.168.0.2 or something like 192.168.50.2

then open a browser with this in it: http://192.168.0.1 type admin, password is blank

choose the tabs to go to securing the router, choose WPA PSK

I won't mind as long as the amount of beer in my glass or bottle isn't diminished. :D
