Bear, the first thing to do is to find out exactly what version you do have.
Start/Open the Anti virus program.
You will see a menu across the top of the program.
You want Help.
Click on that and then the About option.
This will tell you what version of the program you have - I believe the latest version is ESET NOD32 Antivirus 3.0
It should also tell you the "virus database version" - If you go to the programs web page you should be able to find what the latest version is...

Otherwise, just download a new free Anti virus program (AVG is quite good). Delete ESET & load new anti virus..

I have a new anti virus that has taken over my com!I downloaded it by mistake and it will not uninstall!I won't register it so it keeps popping up in place of what page I am running! The icon on the bottom keep showing different messages about how many viruses are on the com ranging from 4,293,2942.Ihave to click a couple of boxes everytime I try to get it off my window and it mixes up the boxes so that one time you hit ''yes''to continue, the next time you are registering it etc.

I am unable to use CC cleaner now and it has slowed my computer down considerably! We were trying to run a game on the com and everything is jerky or stalled!

It is called ANTIVIRUS XP2008!

Anybody have any experience with it?

Stan I hadn't heard of that before - but looking on the net it is pretty bad & a spam rather than a genuine virus checker!!!
The best answer I came up on how to remove it is this -

Getting rid of Antivirus xp 2008 is nearly impossible.
But if your back ground is blue or has the little sign where it say (warning!your computer is infected with spyware)and the screen saver is the screen saver of the blue erorr code and when you right click on your desktop is missing the desktop tab and the screensvaer tab.You could something about that.Stert>run>gpedit.msc>click ok>you will be redirected to group policy>on the right click user configeration>Adminisrtative templates>controle panel>display>now click on hide desktop tab>now diable it and close the window>click on it again and enable it>ok now right click on your desktop>properties>desktop>now look at the name of the wallpaper you have>open a new note pad and write down the name of the wallpape>copy that code (the one you just wrote down in notepad)>goto start>search>and past the code and search it in all files and floder >once you have searched itthere will like 7files right click them and delete and go to recyle bin and delete them from there>now go back to group policy anddisable screen saver and then enable it>then restart your computer and change the wallpaper and the screen saver
And if you each step you will have your desktop back to narmal!
Oh and yeah, just ignore all of the minor pop ups done by antivirus xp 2008.Hope this helps!
Have a nice day!:)

Stan there is a scanner here that would do the job..
http://webtoolsandtips.com/remove-spywa ... tall-free/
It says it is free to download, but my guess is it free to check your pc, but you probably have to pay for the program to remove it!!
I am told this one is completely free & when you run it will remove your problems!!!!

maybe you should do a system restore

when you installed the antivirus the computer should have taken a "snapshot" of your computer settings before the install (if you are using XP)

click on all programs/accesories/system tools/system restore

this will take back the computer to before you installed it

have a look

if you have any problems then pm me and i will help you

oh, by the way, i am an IT engineer, well at least i was when i was in England!!

Forgot to mention

it will not delete any of your documents that you have created/saved since the time it did the "snapshot"

it will only be system files and any other programs that you have installed since that time

Thanks ,I will try system restore!I tried to download CCcleaner again and the malware that Bob suggested, they both downloaded ,but I can't find them listed in programs or in install /remove programs on the control panel. So I am suspecting tyhat this virus is preventing these actions!

Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up uninstalling NOD32 and installing the latest version of AVG. Seems to be OK. Cheers Guys.

Stan, the malware you have will block access to system retstore to prevent it from being deleted.

Use either Bob's suggestions above or give this little program a try:

http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/downloads/2160965/superantispyware

Download, install and update it`s signature files before running it.

Will have you fixed up in no time :)

some spyware software will probably delete it, although you might have to try a few different ones
but some spyware can be a b*tch to get rid of. a system restore is safe and will be like you didnt install the software at all

my suggestion was a last resort if these type of software didnt work

If you boot up in "safe mode" this should stop the spyware program from loading up on your system and you can do a system restore from there

How to boot into safe mode (just in case you didnt know)

Using the F8 Method

Restart your computer.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode.
Do whatever tasks you require and when you are done reboot to boot back into normal mode.

I downloaded superantispyware that BB suggested. It is in my programs and when I brought it up,I hit scan and XP2008 came up and started scanning!I hit stop scan, remove etc. and it will not take any commands.
I realize now that it has been scanning before which is why I was getting popups with different numbers of viruses all day and why other programs run jerkily.

I am trying to wait until it finishes its scan to see if I can run Superanti program,if not I will try booting in safe mode(I didn't know how, thanks). It is up to 1869 viruses right now so I think I have about 500 more before it finishes a scan!
