I applied for a one year non-immigrant O extension for marriage yesterday. The immigration officer used 34 baht to the dollar to change my US$ income to baht.

To answer where you have quoted me. You are correct apart from your terminology. After 2 months you are eligible to apply for an EXTENSION to your ORIGINAL visa which (if successful) will take you up the the 12 month point (FROM YOUR FIRST ENTRY). after your first year is up you apply for another EXTENSION - again to your original visa - so in effect you are contionuously EXTENDING your ORIGINAL visa.
It is not as you have written above "another 1 year O visa"
It is the original visa - simply extended each year again and again until you stop it or become ineligible.
So you do not ever have to leave Thailand if you go down this route.
Finally you mentioned the Udon immigration office. This is now closed and all immmigration affairs have to be conducted in Nong Khai (the closest office to Udon)

I part understand your second bit (directed at Papaguido) but your first visa (single for 3 months entry) or multiple entry - good for multiple entries up to 1 year) and is obtained outside Thailand. Unless you extend this as stated above then you have to re-validate the next segment every 3 months by leaving and re-entering Thailand. On a normal (paid for) visa obtained outside Thailand and NOT extended, there is currently no requirements to show any proofs of income when activating the next 3 month segment. Generally - the proof of income requirements is for extensions - which usually means people want to stay here long term (longer than 1 year) and this is why they want to see proof that you can support yourself.

Assuming you mean to 'activate' the next 90 segment on a multiple entry non-imm visa, then all you should need is your passport, and the 1500 (or therabouts) baht for an entry visa into Laos.
All you are doing in effect is leaving Thailand completely, entering Laos for a trip there (even if only a 20 minute trip) and then coming back to enter Thailand utilising the multi-entry non-imm visa you have already paid for and BEEN APPROVED for. Therefore no further proof 'should' be required in relation to the visa.

You have to weigh up the costs (and troubles) of applying for the extension after 2 months (if you are eleigible) or going to Laos 4 times a year on day trips.

:D very happy!
udonmap.com is the best! I am as clear as can be on my decision, with all the info supplied by you all here. Looks like a multi-entry O visa and the 3 month border runs has won out in favor over the 1 year extension at immigration.
This has been a positive experience, having detailed and legal info from people that take the time to care. I don't think that I will be mixed up about things now. If I need to I will be back here.

OK, I have my type O multy entry visa now and will be back home (Udon) soon. I will do the 3 month border runs to Laos to activate each segment of the visa.
We used an escort service last time to make runs on a tourist visa. Low on funds now I will go by myself. I guess that my entry visa into Laos is purchased in Laos at the entry point over Friendship Bridge and not in Nong Khai, and I can bus there form Nong Khai, am I correct?
Also I guess the multy entry visa is good on my final run, when I try to get the last 3 months i.e. the extra 3 months segment activated bringing me to a total of 15 months, is it?
Much Thanks, STARS

Stars, you buy your visa in Laos, US$ 35 rather than Baht. Maybe a dollar extra on weekends. You require a passport photo, passport and a pen is handy. About a week before your multiple entry Non O expires go to Laos and get the bonus 3 months.

Bus to Nong Khai bus station, tuk tuk to bridge, shuttle over bridge, get Laos visa, enter Laos, buy duty free, exit Laos, shuttle over bridge, enter Thailand, tuk tuk to bus terminal, bus to Udon, telephone wokkawombat to share your beer Lao with him.
