Vasectomy reversal

PostAuthor: Mainer » October 24, 2007, 10:51 pm

Does anyone have experience with having a vasectomy reversed or know of anyone who has? I have heard that it is more difficult as time passes with some reports saying after 20-25 years, it is very difficult.

I would think in Thailand, there might be men who are thinking of this procedure, because they generally have younger wives and many do want children.

Mainer you need to google vasectomy reversal. There is a lot of information and stats relating to age, and time elapsed since the operation.

From my memory, after 20 years you would need a miracle to still have viable sperm.

The numbers below are suspect because the source has something to gain from a prospective patient believing that the liklyhood of success is high.

info from: http://www.vasectomymedical.com/vasecto ... rates.html

vasovasotomy are a patency rate of 99% with a pregnancy rate of 64%,
vasoepididymostomy 65% patency rate and 41% pregnancy rate.

Years since Vasectomy
Under 3 years Sperm Return 97% Pregnancy Rate 76%
3-8 years Sperm Return 88% Pregnancy Rate 53%
9-14 years Sperm Return 79% Pregnancy Rate 44%
Greater than 15 years Sperm Return 71% Pregnancy Rate 30%

Mainer,

I had the op and had a reversal after 9 years, have since Fathered 3 children, the last one with my Thai wife.

The op itself involved micro surgery and was bloody painful, I was in agony for weeks afterwards, thats not to say you will feel the same or have the same success rate, but nothing ventured nothing gained.

I would advise getting a good surgeon and dare I say have the operation done outside of Thailand, my experience with Thai Medical proceedures are not good.

Bamboo I think it is also very relevant to this discussion if you could tell us how old you were when you had the original op.

It certainly seems to be a factor when you look at the odds of a successful reversal.

Hi Guys,
I had the original op in 1982, had it reversed in 1990, and my partner conceived within 4 months, we had a little girl in 1991 , a boy in 1992.

My Thai wife and I had a little boy in February this year.

I hope the above helps and good luck to everyone wanting children, by the way I will be 51 next March and feel like 31 !!, also must add that I do not drink to excess and I do not smoke at all, I try and keep myself reasonably fit. :D

painful?? during or after, and if after, did you behave and pretty much have a nothing day, even walking around. i was advised to just go home and relax for 24 hrs. did some walking around, but not much and no discomfort during or after. well, except for needle, which was less painful than dentist needle, which i hate. :D

also think 65k is expensive for thailand, but you did use private high end hospital. 8)

I assumed POB was talking about a reversal, rather than the snip. When I had mine done (snip) in Oz about 6 years ago cost me about THB6000.

That's easy Ron. For me personally, I got the snip so I could not be responsible for a "surprise I'm pregnant " phone call from the girlfriend. When I had the snip, I considered myself too old to sire kids. I have none, don't want none. I'm quite happy to accept children already born, just consider myself too old to take care of more.

A good mate of mine had to "get married", because SHE decided it was time to have kids. He was not consulted in this decision. 3 months prior to this we were both chasing the same woman.

So when she got pregnant without his blessing, me and my mate came to the conclusion that she was deciding which one of us was to be the father. :yikes:

Fortunately for me, I lost. 8)

I got snipped a week later, and have never regretted it. That was 10 years ago. Different for other people I know, but it suits me fine.

By the way, I love kids and am not scared off by any future girlfriend having kids. I just believe in being around for them when they are growing up, and being fit enough to kick a ball around with them during those important stages in their youth.

aznyron

I had 3 children with my previous wife in the UK and thought at the time that was it. However life changes and she met someone else when I was working away. Now remarried with TW and we would like to have a family together. On the success rate yes worked 100%
