Why build so big?

PostAuthor: BKKSTAN » November 1, 2008, 8:41 am

Went to our 2.7 rai riverfront property yesterday and was pleasantly surprised to see that the Aussie that bought 4 rai(not on the riverfront) around the corner from our land, was in the last stages of completing a nice 2 story house.Talked to the workers and got the figure of about 4.5 M for his place including his land costs.I thought,''OK,to bad he is not on the riverfront''!

As we were leaving the workers started talking about the Canadian that was building on the river on the Westend of the Village(we are on the East end)about 500 meters down the road.So we went to look,WOW!Approx.5 Rai with a palatial main house and a very nice bungalow attached to the main house by a multiple carport area.Long circular driveway with about 3 rai of lawn area. Some workers saying 20+ M!!

I was thinking the bungalow was more than sufficent for us and what was someones thinking that would get them to spend 20 Million on a home in Thailand?

I like my wifes first comment!''To much money,4 M OK and put the rest in the bank"!

Her second comment,"OK we build now'' was not so agreeable!I said,"No honey, remember we agreed we are not going to build here because we are going to move where Goy(our daughter)attends University!'This land is your security investment in place of a house, remember?''

''Oh yes,I forgot!''

I said,''sure you forgot!''

If I throw you a bone you can be sure even the marrow will be sucked out.

One man's life savings, is another's chump change. :-({|=

it doesnt matter how much money you have . you can only sit in one chair , or sleep in one bed at a time !!!!!!the bigger the house , the more expense and headaches you will have running it , a house that size will need full time staff , theres your headache.

Different strokes for different folks. If they can afford it why not? So long as they realise the old but well worn saying: "Don't spend more in Thailand than you can afford too loose!" AND having seen 2 such agreements fail this also this so called 30+30 year lease on land is not worth the paper it's written on.

Also, a 20 million baht house is not going to be a good investment. If something happens and they have to leave, they won't be able to sell it at that price.

Take a look at this house (built by a farang)

http://www.udonrealestate.com/10266.asp

This house COST 18 million to build - then the guy ran out of money, so it was unfinished. Now he can't sell it for even 8 million.

Money down the pan. :fryingpan:
