Bars asked to observe alcohol ban

PHUKET: As a mark of respect for Asarnha Bucha and Buddhist Lent this Thursday and Friday, respectively, bars and other sellers of alcohol on the island are being asked to observe an alcohol ban on the two Buddhist holidays.

Businesses are asked not to serve alcohol from midnight on Wednesday night until midnight on Friday night.

Kathu Police Superintendent Col Grissak Songmoonnak told the Gazette, “It is not illegal for bars to sell alcohol, but like other [police] superintendents around the island, I have received an official letter from the local District Chief asking the police to try to ensure that alcohol is not sold on both days.”

Similarly, Chalong Police Superintendent Col Samarn Chainarong said, “I have received a letter from the District Chief asking me for co-operation from bars in my area to show respect on these important days for Buddhists.”

Ah good, there is a God, I'd decided to give staying in BKK a miss on 17th & 18th and come upto UT early, so this is good news indeed for a thirsty traveller, after 7000 miles & 24 hrs travelling I'll be ready for a beer !

Let me start by explaining this is just a "heads up."I have no insider knowledge on this subject, just the experience of what has occurred in previous years.
You are asked to be polite and observe the custom of no alcohol on these important Buddhist lent days. This request originates from above govt level, so although not a law, you can bet the BIB will interpret as such. This means as a customer seen drinking you will undoubtedly have broken some other law.ie:Make sure you are carrying your passport with you. Don't drive a motorbike or car after consuming alcohol. You all know the score, I'm sure.
As a proprietor of a bar serving drink, you can expect to receive some special attention in the not too distant future  Now is it really worth taking the risk when its only two days, midweek too?Why not honour and respect, if not the Buddha, at least the religion of our hosts?I will be.
One further thought. By publishing the name or location of those bars that will be opening on here, you are making the BIB's job , a lot easier.I am sure they will visit personally to show their gratitude

Alcohol, alcohol, alcohol, must have my alcohol with others in a bar or I will have a terrible time!

My God,what am I to do?Am I going to have to ''brown bag'' it and look like some alcoholic or bum?

What will I do if the bars are not selling alcohol?

glad my baileys got a small restocking last week, time to enjoy the balcony and oud speakers on pole from village, oh joy. 8)

Stan I don't think it will make much difference in Udon Thani, the bars are empty even when there is no Buddist Holy day of obligation.

The people it will effect are the tourists and mongers that will miss two days of drinking out of their vacation time, that they have saved up all year for. Imagine the poor sod who arrives in Bangkok at that time, books into the Mothership, for a couple of days of fun, and finds all the bars shut before his trip to Sin City.

"Must have my alcohol" ? Yeh you bet I bloody well must, as I said 7k miles & 24 hrs uncomfortable travelling, arriving in a country some 15 - 20 degrees walmer than I've been used to these last 6 months, yes I'll be ready for a cold beer or two - and as for "brown bag" nah, a nice classy hip flask will serve me better .
You might be alright 'resting' for another day in your paradise - every day is the same for you, what's a couple of days on the waggon - nothing for you in your circumstances, BUT I'm not in this position, I've only 2 weeks vacation here and want to cram as much personal enjoyment as I can into my meagre time in LOS, after all my trip will cost me around tb200,000 plus lost wages, so no, I don't want to sit around sipping water - I could have done that at home.
I've no intention of getting blind drunk, causing a scene with a drunken brawl, or anything like that, just a nice long cool drink in the 'paradise' that I have saved up to visit - surely you can live with that Stan ?

Mally. If its really the beer you will be craving for, rather than the bar. Most of the bigger hotels will send one to your room on request. You see the thing is, not to be seen being disrespectful, not drinking the beer. Alternatively I am sure one of the in town forum members would purchase a few bottles or a box the day before and share it with you when you arrive, discretely of course.I understand the major supermarkets are not selling alcohol on those days either.

Mally you are welcome in Udon and I think you will find a few bars open. Dont worry about some of the whingers up this way, they want to keep Udon all to themselves.

I know of 2 bars that will be open with beer and whiskey flowing. The bars owners have said they will close if the powers to be pay the closure days lease payments and utilities. They respect also Bhudda but sometimes all these closures do impact on struggling bar owners. Some of the biggest whingers are the non drinkers who do not like the bar scene or someone trying to make a profitable business.

Maybe if some of the bar owners had carried out due dilligence and researched the bar business in Thailand they would have known that there are some days where they cannot sell alcohol. There are many well run and profitable bars in Udon that will comply with the wishes of the Thai government and close for the requested times and will not suffer too much financial pain.

Nothing more sorry looking than a customer in a darkened bar drinking booze from a coffee cup unless it is a bar owner desperate to keep the till ringing. By the way I am a drinker but I can survive without beer for the two days.
