The Mrs wants new windows and doors .. so to keep the girl happy I am thinking along with her thoughts and i am coming round to the idea.

At the moment we have wood with tinted glass in, they are now 6 + years old and are showing signs of age, been painted several times and some of the openers really do not fit that well anymore and some are going a bit rotten, so did have a very quick look at some in the builders merchants some time back, but was'nt really paying tooo much attention, anyone recommend the UPVC (plastic) type or the Aliminium sliding type ? better security on the UPVC i think, but will probably have the security bars put up anyway, also thinking about taking out the front door and window and having one big sliding glass door with dark glass.

Average cost per unit (windows and doors )anyone ? sorry can't give size's as i don't really know what they are,(roughly about 4 foot x 3 foot ??? for windows) but could fit most average size's as a little alteration here and there should'nt be a problem.

And price differance for ali and upvc ?

any thoughts, or any experiance on these matters anyone ?

I am thinking more the way of buying/fitting Sliding Aliminium ones.

Any plus's or minus's on either type ?

The window fitters I had recommended that they dont take out the old wooden frames unless they have to (rotten) and they can fit aluminium cladding over the wood then fir aluminium sliding windows as normal. the reason for not removing the wood is that usually when fitted they are just hammered in with huge nails and therefore on removal its usual for the cement/plaster to crack and chip big time.
I wasn't convinced and the first ones I had done I insisted they take out the wood.
For a small (about 3 foot) double window + mosquito netting the price was between 3 and 4 thousand, for a larger (4 foot) double window it was between 4 and 5 thousand (incl. fitting).
The second ones I had fitted were done with the cladding and I can honestly say that visually there is absolutely no difference - price was pretty much the same too

I also had what you are discussing - and had the wooden front door removed along with a window adjacent to it and then had the whole area opened up and sliding doors fitted which again were aluminium and dark glass. I also have two panels at the side of each door - making it a rather large unit altogether (about 8 foot)
Total cost for this whole job was 12,000 baht. I then had another company manufacture an internal sliding metal ornate door as a security door which covered the whole 8 foot fitting and the cost was 7000 baht.

I hope this gives you some guidelines.

That's exactly what i was looking for,the big sliding doors seem a resonable cost too @ 12,000 baht, and about the size i am looking for.
