windows xp problems

PostAuthor: Bear » September 21, 2008, 4:04 pm

When I turned on my computer today it says You may be a victim of counterfeiting, please purchase genuine windows. What is this? I have had no problems for over a year with my installed windows XP. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks PS I cant get rid of this message.

without knowing a bit more about your situation its hard to say what the problem is

have you got a legal copy of windowsXP???? do you know???

the most likely cause is that your computer was set to do automatic updates and installed an update to check to see if you have a legal copy of windows

the are ways to trun this off
http://www.mydigitallife.info/2006/04/2 ... nt-page-4/

you can also do a system restore to before this update was installed then if you knowingly have a dodgy copy of xp
turn off automatic updates in the control panel/security centre

i know a lot of people will probably say this is wrong, but having to pay an extra 4 or 5000 baht to get a proper copy of XP isnt exactly right either!!!

you can download the tool to stop the message from here

Pm me if you require any help

I had the same problem (way back though) & someone on the board kindly posted a list (there were about 6, from memory) files that I had to delete - or at least what the 'extension' was called. I think (again from memory) that I had to actually rename 2 of these files before I could delete them, as windows refused their deletion under their original name. I have tried to locate that thread, but can't (as I said it was a long time ago). Maybe someone else can find it, or the original poster can re-post....

Not having an original copy of XP can be a pain, but as I understand it . it is only Office that is limited to one computor XP can be loaded on to many computors.
I have an original and if you can load onto many computors feel free to use mine.
You will need to download SP2 and 3 as well from windows update, but that is just time.
if i can help I will.
You will have to of course re format your C drive but that is not to difficult either I have been told.

That information is not correct

you can use the licence for xp for 1 computer only
if you had 2 computers in your house, you would have to have a licence for each PC

If you have reloaded Xp onto a computer, i would not recommend it unless you know what you are doing
you need to get a driver for everything, i.e video card, network card etc
xp might find a lot of the drivers itself but dont rely on it

you will need the network card driver before the re-install otherwise you will not be able to connect to the internet to get the other drivers!!!

you then need to installl all of your other programs, antivirus and be able to back up all you data which would have been wiped when you formatted your hard drive

a re-install is not for the feint hearted!!!!

it would take about an hour and half - if you know what you are doing
if you dont, you might be at it for days!!!

click on all programs/accessories/system tools/system restore

look for a date that was before the install and select that date

the pc will do its stuff and restart then do a bit more

you will need to change the settings the control panel to stop the automatic updates -set to notify me

if automatic updates try to install the following updates just click that you dont want to install them

KB892130 =- WGA Validation Tool

KB905474 - which installs LegitCheckControl.dll

these are the little puppies that are causing all of your problems

you might need to restore it to an earlier time

i downloaded that file from that link and it was okay

it might just be your antivirus saying that because its a .exe file

you need to try to get this file and try that first
not knowing what antivirus you have or what is blocking it makes it hard to say what to do

Could try this....It was the wga* that I was talking about before. A couple of them I think Windows will not let you delete - but you can rename them & then delete.

Here is the site I got the instructions from, if you want to read first..

http://blog.taragana.com/index.php/arch ... ple-steps/

Following three simple steps now you can get rid of the pesky and sometimes buggy Windows Genuine Advantage (WGA) notifications:
1. Reboot Windows in safe mode (hold the f8 key while booting and you will get the option to boot in safe mode) and then:
2. Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe) and search for wgalogon folder and delete it. You should backup up the registry beforehand, in case somethiong goes wrong.
3. In your windows directory search for files wga* and delete them.

You are done!

Now reboot back normally and continue your work. Windows Genuine Advantage will not bother you anymore.

Note: I had previously posted a tip which requires a third-party executable. Now it is not required anymore. You can do it yourself by carefully following the guide above.

Warning: Use at your own risk. Backup everything before you do.

Bonus Hint: A better option is to switch to Linux and enjoy all the peace of mind that comes from using Genuine Linux operating system and non-Microsoft software and in not using Genuine Windows software. Additionally laugh all the way to your bank with all the money saved in licensing.

P.S. you do then have to do as Gaz suggests & stop these automatically downloading again!!!
