I'm not actually worried about watching metacafe videos, I posted this thread to try to sort out my wireless connection initially, thats OK now but I can't connect my desktop to the router..

Now I find in my desktop Win XP Network Connections folder there is no Local area connection to enable. I had to enable this on the laptop to use the internet via LAN ethernet through the router.

Does anyone know how to set up a Local Area Connection in Network Connections....Win XP?

Maybe you've been through this but I'm trying to remember when I set mine up. You load the CD and go through the steps in the wizard for cabling etc for your desktop. You may then have a log-in page and you enter your username and password. Once all lights are showing on the modem and router you should connect to the internet. I then set my WEP key for my home network. The laptop picked up the signal and prompted for the key, entered it and that was it.

Here is Microsoft's Wireless Network setup page:

Alan,
I've finally pinned it down to the LAN / USB converter I am using, I just can't get the PC to read the driver that was supplied with it, it's supposed to be the driver for win XP but nothing happens, even tried it on the laptop, it doesn't work there either. Looks like I need to go out and but a LAN PCI card to install

In the first instance I would bring it back to the guy that sold it and get him to try it on his pc. In theory it is supposed to do away with the need to open your pc to install an add-on card. Sorry it didn't work out but I'd go back and try for my money back before you go to the hassle of adding a PCI NIC.

TekGems.com wrote:I was asking myself the other day, "Do I really need to open up my computer and add a card so I can have Internet? There must be an easier way!" Then I came across this beauty. This simple solution adds an Ethernet port to your PC without opening the computer. All you need is this USB to Ethernet adapter. Just run the setup.exe on the included CD. Then once you finish that, you plug in the USB adapter and you have Ethernet jack that you can connect your DSL or Cable Modem to. You're good to go. So easy, I couldn't believe it myself!

From TekGems.com above
"Just run the setup.exe on the included CD."

There's no setup.exe on the CD I got with the adapter............... AHAH....The plot thickens.

Need to go back to the Complex me thinks.......
