Wireless Internet Connection

PostAuthor: Kudjap or Bust » December 13, 2007, 6:09 pm

After some time I have now bought a new DLink wireless router with firewall. Have installed it no problem, can use the internet with the Ethernet cable connected BUT the wireless part doesn't work...

I've been through the install maual, I've deleted the other connection type for the ADSL Modem, but still doesn't work wireless.........

Any ideas?

Oh I have Win Vista if that makes any difference

Well kind of sorted it. Now the wireless works but is very unstable. Keeps dropping out, I've replaced the router with the modem again and all is OK.

Is it normal for the signal to be unstable, I am using the laptop about 5 metres away from the router with a clear line of sight so theres no interference.

should be solid.

As I stated before, a laptops built in antenna is usually weak. If an external antenna is used, you can get up to 25 to 45 meters of decent signal strength.

You may have a faulty modem I use a Dlink and set it up with the built in 'wisard' and it works all over my house and around the yard without an external antenna 8)

I have a feeling it was just one of those times when TOT were playing silly B's with their ADSL, although when I connected the modem, an Aztech, it was stable. Still all seems to be OK at the moment so finger and all digit s x'd it'll be god from now.

So now I have the laptop with a stable wireless connection, must have been TOT messing with the ADSL, now it's time to connect up the desktop to the router.........Oooops, the desktop doesn't have a LAN connection...

What do I need to buy specifically, I know its a LAN card but what is a good make, model, specification... and can I get one in the Complex?

Thank you

Another option is a USB/LAN converter. I bought one for a mate last year (Rayong) and it was 250 Baht. I've seen them upstairs in the complex in a few of the IT shops. Even with limited English they should know, "USB/LAN adapterrrrrr,"

No removing screws, no drivers needed, just plug and pray... [-o<

Sounds good Alan, think I'll go down that road, a lot easier for my limited PC maintenance knowledge.

This is what you are looking for and the package I bought was exactly the same as this one:

Thanks again Alan, I've seen these on eBay and wondered if they would be any good, now I know. Got to be in the Complex later today so I'll drop by the computer stores

OK bought a LAN/USB converter..pluged it in to the stand alone PC and all OK, dialog box says it ready to use...Plugged in the router and Nothing...It says unknown device.....now theres no driver with the router, I mean all I did to the laptop was run the CD ROM it came with and entered the TOT ADSL info, username / password etc. All worked fine...But the PC NAH....

How do I get this thing to recognise the router..........
