Wireless Network Sharing.

PostAuthor: Irish Alan » October 20, 2007, 3:55 pm

This problem is not mine but out of curiosity I would like to get to the bottom of it for the guy concerned.

In an Udon Wi-Fi spot I can connect as can the other customers but there is another guy there that cannot connect unless he is the only one there. It is becoming a running joke that is not a joke for him that when he sees me coming in he knows it is time for him to leave.

He still get the messages, “connected" and "signal strength excellent" but the reality is when he clicks on a link the page takes an eternity to connect and after approximately 3 minutes he gets the dreaded “page not found message.”

My theory is that it is his network card but possibly it could be something in his network settings. Anybody experiencing this and any solutions would be welcome before this guy smashes his lovely shiny Compaq across my head.

Could it possibly be an IP address conflict? Next time have them reset the wireless router (unplug for 30 seconds) and see it that helps.

this has nothing to do with an IP address or router issue

The laptop is equipped with a weak internal antenna, which makes for a weak connection, the signal may show up as strong, but it will be weak. If the guy sat next to the wifi router, he may be better off.

The past 3 days or so, the internet is spotty or slow on many sites. It may have something to do with a neighboring countries bad connection or problem.

Irish alan, ask me when you see me and I can give you more info about wifi.

Okay thanks for the reply guys. That was my thinking Wilson as it is I think it is a base model and the wi-fi card is most likely a low-end cheapo. I'm sure he wouldn't have any problems with a quality wireless USB adapter.

I just discovered something. In the Irish Clock I can connect to the network under XP but when I boot into (Hasta La) Vista I cannot. I thought the problem might be a driver error but actually my card is supported under Vista. I pick up 2 networks, IRISH CLOCK and a D-Link Network. I see them but when I click to connect I cannot. If it is an issue regarding the password I am flocked as Steve is not there at the mo.

vista has very good software for wifi, but the rest of the OS is crap.

I A, try rolling back the driver, or uninstalling the device, and let the OS find the right driver.

Yes it's password protected. I used to have it on my laptop, but recently reformatted the drive. Maybe someone who knows it will be kind enough to PM it to you.

Wilson, the network card seems to be doing it's job in picking up the networks but I just cannot connect. There are 2 networks showing in Irish Clock, D-Link and IRISH CLOCK. D-Link prompts for a password but Irish Clock doesn't. You are right Papa that the Clock is password protected but it was a long time ago when I logged on in there and Steve didn't actually tell me the password but sat at my pc and changed the settings... I think he deliberately didn't let me see... :D If anybody knows it I'd appreciate a PM... Thank you.

find wireless network connections in the control panel, right click properties, TCP IP and make sure you have the settings at obtain address automatically

also try right clicking on the signal icon in the right corner of the browser screen, choose repair, that will wipe out the DNS cache and clear the old settings to the new ones

you may know all this stuff, but just in case 8)

I have the code for the clock... I wish I would have known it last week as a couple of customers needed it and the staff didn't know it. I still cannot connect in the Clock using Vista but I can using XP. However I can connect to the Wi-Fi in MT Coffee using Vista... Answers on a postcard please... #-o #-o #-o

Update: The guy with the sharing problem has moved to another province. (Make me feel bad why don't you.)

And I sorted my Vista problem with a very hi-tech solution... I typed in the correct password.
