PostAuthor: beer monkey » December 7, 2008, 12:09 am

I am on my second one in two years...and i think i need another one, its on 24/7 but keeps dropping a connection and just going to 'Local' connection my pc connects with it, but drops the internet connection(been doing it all day today), so thinking i need to renew, but thinking the life span should be longer than 12 months...or should it ?

Definitely should last longer than 12 months. I use a Billion which I bought with me from Oz, and it is probably 5 years old.

Do wireless routers have a power supply ?

I bought my Netgear 54 Mbps model DG834G v1 while living in Pattaya in '05. It's been going strong ever since. My reason for the purchase was this was the same unit being used by the dealer where I bought it.

Mine is a couple years old and no problems. I expect it to last many years. It's a D-Link bought locally.

B.M. my question is why are you using a wireless ? What are the advantages of a wireless router ?
I guess I am old school I like to see my toys wired I avoid wireless routers & keyboards I have a wireless trackball mouse it was nothing but trouble until I hook it to my new Imac computer and now it works great just a suggestion if you buy a new one get a linksys they seem to me better than most other network
products another question could it be your network drivers need updating ? try reinstalling it. I am in agreement with the other posters it does seem unusual that you are replacing them that often

Originally had a netgear but that blew up > power cut and it never worked again.. Brought a BT voyager (British telecom) think it was £70-80 a year back, but now they are all around £40, the unit was a bit warm yesterday, so maybe i should switch it off more when i am not using it and see what happens.
Thanks.

Back home had a Netgear from NTL but it was never on 24/7. I remember it would run very warm at times of heavy traffic, downloading movies etc. 12 months seems a very short time.

Wonder if heat is an issue... :-k :-k :-k

I am having problems with my Linksys router which has all the lights on but won't connect to the Internet. Have done the rebooting and every other check. Now I am temporarily using a basic one-port D-Link non-wireless and all is well. My Linksys has been in constant use since I bought it in February 2007. I had hoped to get a bit more life out of it. Am off to PC World today to buy another Linksys because I am used to the model and it is a good price. Just a thought though - shouldn't they last a bit longer than this? I am wondering if I ought to pay a bit more and get something better. What do others think?
*** All sorted - a reset has solved the problem for now and am working wirelessly again.

Course they don't If they were durable then you wouldn't buy a new router would you?

When I win the lottery, buy some land and get my house built am going to have a comms room with an enterprise grade router in it that will last me a few years mounted in its own rack with fans at the top Smiley

I do wonder whether it is the variablity of temperatures that kills routers but I doubt you'd want one with a fan in the top that ran constantly would you?

Yes, they should last for years and years. My Netgear wireless router is going on 3 years old.

Loosing your internet connection may have more to do with your service provider than with your modem. (The assumption here is that you are using a wireless modem/router.)

If you are using a wireless modem, I suspect that your losing connection has to do with line of sight. Get your ISP to come out and inspect it for you. Technically there is no reason why a router cannot last until it becomes obsolete.

Yes they last for years, afterall it's all solid state. I'm guessing it's getting to hot, you may need to elevate it a bit to give it better air flow, or it's a fluctuating power source hence you should get a power filter for where it plugs in and put the puter through it as well.

I used a Belkins and had on 24/7, was still going after 2 years. I had over 25 people and their laptops online at the house and my Xbox on also. Worked great and never had a problem with it. I think it was rated to have 1500 people on it.
